A Zimbabwean developer, Courage Nyoni, has gained international attention after creating the Lobola Calculator, an app that estimates bride price and introduces users to a longstanding African cultural practice.
Lobola is a traditional marriage custom in many Southern African communities. During the process, families negotiate a bride price as part of marriage arrangements.
Many other African communities also practise similar traditions. Family values, community expectations, and cultural customs often shape these discussions, making the process difficult for outsiders to understand.
Nyoni created the Lobola Calculator to make the concept easier for people to explore. Rather than building a simple tool that generates random figures, he worked closely with community elders to understand the factors that often influence lobola negotiations. He then used their insights to help shape the app’s algorithm.

The app asks users a series of questions before generating an estimated lobola amount for the bride price. Some questions focus on familiar factors such as education level and place of origin, and it also takes a lighter approach by asking about breakfast preferences, lifestyle choices, and whether users spend their weekends in church or at clubs.

The algorithm assigns different weights to each answer and adjusts the estimated figure accordingly. By combining both serious and casual factors, the app attempts to reflect the variety of considerations that can arise during lobola discussions.
The Lobola Calculator has attracted users far beyond Africa. Many people from other parts of the world have downloaded the app out of curiosity and used it to learn about a cultural practice they had never experienced before.
Its growing international popularity eventually caught the attention of Japanese television, which featured the app and introduced it to a wider audience. The appearance highlighted the global interest in African traditions and the creative ways technology can make cultural practices more accessible.
Some people believe it helps explain an important cultural tradition to a global audience. Others argue that it reduces a complex, deeply personal process to a set of calculations and numbers.
Despite the differing opinions, the Lobola Calculator has succeeded in starting conversations about culture, tradition, and technology. Through a simple mobile app, Nyoni has brought a uniquely African practice to the attention of people around the world.
