We can all agree that Argentina versus Cape Verde was one of the most surprising and tense matches of the 2026 World Cup. Before kickoff, most fans had already assumed the outcome: reigning champions, ranked second in the world, Lionel Messi. An easy victory.

But it was anything but.

And before we discuss the match itself, it’s worth taking a moment to ask: who exactly are Cape Verde?

The Nation That Had No Business Being Here

Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands located in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. The population is around 525,000 people, which is smaller than that of most cities that hosted World Cup matches.

They qualified for their first-ever World Cup this year, signed players via LinkedIn, and their starting goalkeeper, Vozinha, is 40 years old. They had already drawn with Spain and Uruguay in the group stage before anyone fully registered that something extraordinary was happening.

They entered the tournament ranked 64th in the world. Their opponents in the Round of 32 were ranked second. The gap on paper was enormous. But the gap on the pitch told a completely different story.

The Night They Pushed Argentina to the Limit

The match in Miami was supposed to be settled early. Messi ensured that in the 29th minute, scoring his 20th World Cup goal in a moment of quiet brilliance, controlling a long ball from defender Martínez before finishing high into the net. Argentina looked settled. Cape Verde looked as if the occasion might overwhelm them.

It did not.

At the hour mark, Deroy Duarte pulled Cape Verde level. He made a run into the box and powered a finish through the legs of Martínez, beyond the goalkeeper, from a tight angle. Across the stadium, Cape Verde fans cried.

The match went to extra time at 1-1. Lisandro Martínez gave Argentina what looked like a winner in the 92nd minute with a superb finish. The tournament seemed to be resuming its expected course.

Then came Sidny Lopes Cabral.

In the 103rd minute, Cabral cut inside to the left of the box and whipped a curling strike over Emiliano Martínez and into the top corner. 2-2. One of the great goals of this World Cup. A moment that will be remembered long after this tournament ends.

The end came in the 111th minute. A Cristian Romero header deflected in off Diney Borges, and Argentina advanced. Four minutes from the end of extra time, Cabral forced another stunning save from Martínez, but Cape Verde could not find a third equalizer to take it to penalties.

In the stands, Argentine fans felt more relief than celebration. On the pitch, Messi and Martínez walked over to console Cape Verde players who were devastated, exhausted, and they had every right to be both.

Cape Verde and the 86-Minute Conversation

Before this tournament, football social media had been fixated on what some called the “86-minute curse”—the idea that African teams consistently concede or collapse in the final minutes of matches when the pressure is highest. Cape Verde came to this World Cup and dismantled that narrative piece by piece.

The Blue Sharks didn’t collapse, but rather they came back twice. Cape Verde made the reigning world champions work for 111 minutes and required an own goal to finally be separated from them.

And through all of it, standing between the posts, was a 40-year-old man from São Vicente who had been unknown to most of the world six weeks ago. Vozinha made eight saves against Argentina, including a one-on-one with Messi and a fingertip stop from one of the best free-kick takers in history. He was already the story of the tournament after his man-of-the-match performance in the 0-0 draw with Spain. This night was something beyond that.

What This Team Leaves Behind

Argentina may well go on to retain the World Cup. But they will not forget Cape Verde. Nobody who watched that night in Miami will.

The Blue Sharks came to this World Cup as true outsiders. They leave it having earned the respect of the entire footballing world.
