AMVCA is one of the most anticipated awards in Africa, celebrating exceptional African storytelling, growth, creativity, and global potential of the entertainment industry.
The Africa Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) will be announcing the nominees for each category live on March 29.
African movie producers have stepped up their creativity, and many actors have undeniably produced, directed and acted brilliantly in the last year.
In January, the organisers opened the call for entries for the 12th edition of the ceremony. AMVCA organizers accepted submissions from January 11 to February 15, inviting eligible works from filmmakers and content creators across Africa.
Nollywood lovers eagerly await the nominees, as filmmakers produced and directed many standout movies.

‘My Mother is a Witch’

This movie directed and written by Niyi Akinmolayan, effectively has strong visual storytelling and moving performances from Mercy Aigbe and Efe Irele.
‘Behind the Scenes‘

This movie was produced by Funke Akindele. It surpassed 2.5 billion in cinemas, which shows how authentic the storyline is. It’s the highest-grossing Nigerian film of 2025.
‘Freedom Way’

This movie shows the impact of poor governance on various societal levels, from the most deprived to the politically corrupt. The film, directed by Olalekan Afolabi and written by Blessing Uzzi, addresses contemporary Nigerian issues thoughtfully.
‘Gingerr‘

This movie was one of the most talked-about films in 2025. It’s a comedy-drama that enjoyed massive nationwide success. Its humor and relatable themes drove impressive cinema attendance in Nigeria.
‘My Father’s Shadow’

This movie directed by Akinola Davies Jr., captures the distinct essence of being Nigerian during a significant historical moment. While, we are not sure if they submitted the movie to the AMVCA as it was financed by British filmmakers, it would be great to see them be nominated.
‘The Herd‘

The Herd is a story based on the realities of Nigeria and real-life events. It received reactions from many viewers because of how relatable it is. It was one of the most notable movies produced in Nigeria.

With the way African actors have exhibited storytelling and acting prowess, this could be a few actors amongst all that will nominated based on predictions.

Funke Akindele

Funke Akindele is called “Box Office Queen” in Nigeria not only because her movie is the most grossed movie in West Africa. The movies she has produced is relatable, it portray the story of every human lives which make people fall i n love with her storytelling skill and creativity.
Etim Effiong
Etim Effiong is popularly known for his versatility in Nollywood movies and he has featured in lots of TV movies in 2025 which shows how predictable it is for him to be nominated in the AMVCA.
Mercy Aigbe
Mercy Aigbe is one of the most succesful versatile female actor in Nigeria known for her work both in Yoruba and English movies. She is known for her strong personality in the movie Industry.
Sope Dirisu
He was the lead actor in ‘My Father’s Shadow,’ which is was for the first movie made by a Nigerian to be selected for the Cannes Official Selection and to win a BAFTA.
Tobi Bakre
Tobi has gained popularity after his win for ‘Brotherhood’ and has drawn acclaim for his versatile performance in Funke Akindele’s 2025 film ‘Behind The Scenes’.
The 2026 AMVCA has also introduced new categories to expand its indigenous language awards. The ceremony will feature 32 award categories, comprising 18 jury-decided categories, 11 audience-voted categories, two lifetime achievement awards, and one trailblazer award.
