Nigerian entrepreneur Abdulsamad Rabiu now holds a net worth of $15.9 billion, rising by $5.78 billion year-to-date (YTD) and emerging as Africa’s best-performing billionaire, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.
Earlier this month, South Africa’s Nathie Kirsh led the continent with a year-to-date gain of $5.29 billion and ranked as Africa’s third richest person, a position Rabiu held since the start of the year.
Rabiu’s recent surge in net worth has pushed him back into third place and moved him closer to becoming the continent’s second richest individual.
At present, fellow Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote remains Africa’s richest person, with a net worth of $33.6 billion and a year-to-date gain of $3.67 billion.
Dangote’s fortune stands at more than double Rabiu’s net worth, which secures his position as Africa’s richest man and leaves no close competition.
Johann Rupert, Africa’s second richest man, holds a net worth of $18.0 billion, although he has recorded a loss of $1.42 billion since the beginning of the year.

In January, Rabiu became the only other Black billionaire among Africa’s five wealthiest individuals, replacing Nassef Sawiris and Kirsh from the previous year’s list.
At that time, Rabiu held a net worth of $10.4 billion and ranked fifth among Africa’s richest people, behind Naguib Sawiris, who had a fortune of $10.7 billion.
By February, Rabiu increased his net worth by $1.21 billion year-to-date to reach $11.3 billion, while Naguib Sawiris, with the same total net worth, recorded a smaller growth of $700 million.
By March, Rabiu’s net worth rose to $14.6 billion, which placed him as the fourth richest person in Africa and the 197th richest person globally, after Kirsh completed a $29 billion divestment.
Rabiu now ranks as the world’s 187th richest person and Africa’s third richest, with a fortune of $15.9 billion, slightly higher than Kirsh’s $15.2 billion.
