As part of his succession plan, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, plans to donate one-third of his fortune to charity, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Halima, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, revealed that the billionaire secured his family’s consent to donate 33% of his estate to charitable causes.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates Dangote’s net worth at $35.1 billion. If his wealth remains at that level, one-third of it would amount to approximately $11.7 billion.

Halima said her father has integrated philanthropy into the family’s long-term succession plans and considers it a vital part of his legacy.

“He sort of put all the structure in place whereby we focus a lot on health and education. He actually donated 25 per cent to the foundation. If you look at it, it is what we call in Sharia Code in Islam; it means he has donated 33 per cent of his whole inheritance to his foundation,” she said.

“That is how important it is to him because philanthropy needs to be in existence generation after generation.

“So giving back is part and parcel of what we do. We believe we’re here, that our business is successful because of the giving back and because of the philanthropic aspect. That is why the 33 per cent is important.”

Halima said the foundation received an initial endowment of $1.25 billion about 10 years ago and has since secured an additional $700 million in funding.

She added that the foundation directs about 70% of its spending to Nigeria, allocates 20% to initiatives across Africa, and invests the remaining funds in projects in other parts of the world.

Dangote’s commitment to philanthropy comes as billionaire giving continues to attract increased global attention.

Through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Dangote supports health, education, nutrition, and humanitarian relief initiatives. The foundation also partners with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand its impact.
