What would you do if someone told you that a man had ridden a motorcycle across water, a woman had run barefoot over LEGO bricks, or a 99-year-old had danced with danger in the skies?

You might dismiss these stories as scenes from a movie. Yet, they are real achievements, recognised by Guinness World Records.

Across the world, ordinary people continue to push the boundaries of human ability, creativity and determination. Some build extraordinary inventions, others attempt seemingly impossible physical challenges, while a few turn everyday activities into remarkable achievements.

From Nigeria to China, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, these five extraordinary feats demonstrate that human imagination knows very few limits.

1. Guinness World Records: Bello Muhammad’s 2.9-Metre Bicycle

Nigeria has another reason to celebrate its young talent, thanks to Bello Muhammad, a cyclist from Kebbi State who earned a place in Guinness World Records by riding a bicycle measuring an incredible 2.9 metres in height.

On September 22, 2026, Muhammad successfully rode the towering bicycle without assistance, setting a record for the tallest bicycle ridden unassisted.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that reports say he fabricated the bicycle himself. Imagine having to climb, balance and ride a bicycle almost three metres above the ground without anyone holding it for you!

His accomplishment received recognition from Guinness World Records and was celebrated at the Kebbi State Government Secretariat in Birnin Kebbi.

Beyond the impressive height of the bicycle, Muhammad’s achievement offers a refreshing reminder of the creativity and technical abilities of young Nigerians. Sometimes, extraordinary innovation begins with nothing more than an idea and the determination to make it work.

2. Zhang Xue: The Man Who Rode a Motorcycle Across Water

Motorcycles belong on roads, right? Well, Chinese entrepreneur and motorcycle manufacturer Zhang Xue has given us a reason to reconsider that assumption.

On October 25, 2026, Zhang set a Guinness World Records title by riding a specially modified motorcycle across open water for an astonishing 40.74 kilometres.

The challenge took place on a river in Mayang, Hunan Province, China, surpassing the previous record of 31.8 kilometres.

Of course, an ordinary motorcycle would sink. Zhang’s team therefore modified the machine with flotation equipment, waterproofing and a specially designed rear tyre that helped propel it across the water.

But this achievement did not happen overnight. Zhang first attempted the challenge in 2009, when he was 22. His earlier attempts ended with him falling into the water. For the successful attempt, his team spent five months testing and refining the motorcycle.

Seventeen years after his first attempt, he finally achieved his extraordinary ambition.

It is a fascinating example of how persistence, engineering and the willingness to try again can turn an apparently impossible idea into reality.

3. Helga Duffy: The 99-Year-Old Woman Who Took to the Skies

Who says adventure must come to an end as we grow older?

Helga Duffy, a German-born woman, offered a remarkable answer when she became the oldest female wing walker at 99 years and 21 days.

She achieved the Guinness World Records title on October 16, 2026, in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.

Wing walking involves performing while secured to the exterior wing of an aircraft in flight. It is certainly not an activity most people would associate with someone approaching their hundredth birthday!

But Helga had long wanted to experience the adventure. She also used the occasion to raise money for an air ambulance service.

Her achievement is particularly inspiring because it challenges conventional ideas about ageing and adventure. While many people might consider such an activity far too daring at that age, Helga chose to pursue something she had always wanted to do.

Perhaps the lesson here is that some dreams deserve a little more time before we give up on them.

4. Gabrielle Wall: The Woman Who Ran Barefoot Across LEGO Bricks

Anyone who has accidentally stepped on a LEGO brick knows just how painful the experience can be. Now imagine deliberately running across hundreds of them without wearing shoes!

New Zealander Gabrielle Wall did precisely that, earning a Guinness World Records title for the fastest 100-metre barefoot run on LEGO bricks.

She completed the challenge in Christchurch, New Zealand, on January 16, 2025, in just 24.75 seconds.

The track required 300 kilograms of LEGO bricks, donated by Imagination Station, a charity that promotes educational activities involving LEGO.

For Gabrielle, the attempt represented more than an unusual sporting challenge. Following a health scare in 2022, she had created a bucket list of things she wanted to accomplish. Setting a world record was one of them.

She trained for the challenge by practising a wider running stance to maintain her balance on the uncomfortable surface.

It is difficult not to wince at the thought of this achievement. But Gabrielle proved that sometimes the most unusual ambitions can produce the most memorable accomplishments.

5. Hilda Baci’s Guinness World Records Jollof Rice Triumph

No collection of extraordinary achievements involving Nigerians would feel complete without a little jollof rice!

In September 2025, Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci teamed up with food brand Gino to prepare the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice ever recorded.

The result was an astonishing 8,780 kilograms of jollof rice, prepared in Victoria Island, Lagos, on September 12, 2025.

The enormous meal required 4,000 kilograms of basmati rice, 164 kilograms of fresh goat meat and approximately 600 kilograms of Hilda’s special jollof pepper mix, among other ingredients.

The scale of the undertaking was so enormous that the specially constructed steel cooking pot buckled twice under the weight!

Even more impressive, the team distributed more than 16,600 portions of the finished meal to members of the public and local communities.

The achievement earned Hilda another Guinness World Records title and contributed to her recognition as a Guinness World Records ICON in 2026.

Beyond the impressive figures, Hilda’s accomplishment celebrated Nigerian food, teamwork and the cultural significance of a dish that continues to inspire friendly rivalry across West Africa.

The Extraordinary Is Sometimes Closer Than We Think

From a towering bicycle in Kebbi to a motorcycle crossing open water, an adventurous grandmother taking to the skies and a chef transforming jollof rice into a global talking point, these achievements remind us of the incredible possibilities of human creativity.

Not every record requires extraordinary strength or expensive equipment. Some begin with curiosity, a personal ambition or an unusual idea that refuses to go away.

And perhaps that is what makes Guinness World Records so fascinating. Behind every extraordinary achievement is a person who dared to attempt something different.

Who knows? Somewhere in the world, someone may already be preparing to break a record that will leave the rest of us wondering how on earth they did it.
