If you live, work or study in Lagos and you don’t have a health plan yet, you now have a deadline. Lagos health insurance becomes compulsory from January 1, 2027, and the state wants everyone enrolled by December 31, 2026.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the date on Tuesday, October 27, while launching the new Lagos Private Health Plans (LPHP). He said:

“Every resident, every employer, and every worker in Lagos is required to have social health insurance.”

Which Lagos Health Insurance Plan Is for You?

There are now two state-backed options. According to the governor, Ilera Eko serves the informal sector and vulnerable residents. Meanwhile, the new private plans target salary earners and companies.

For traders, artisans and self-employed people, the cheapest route is Ilera Eko. Its basic individual plan costs ₦15,000 a year, which works out to about ₦1,250 a month. It covers doctor’s visits, antenatal care, childbirth, malaria treatment, lab tests, simple surgeries and up to 15 days in hospital a year.

For workers, the Lagos Private Health Plans come in four levels (prices checked October 2026):

  • Bronze, ₦30,000 a year: inpatient care up to ₦150,000 and a general ward for up to seven days.
  • Silver, ₦60,000 a year: inpatient care up to ₦350,000, plus maternity cover up to ₦100,000.
  • Gold, ₦120,000 a year: inpatient care up to ₦1 million, a semi-private ward, and chronic conditions covered.
  • Gold Plus, ₦150,000 a year: inpatient care up to ₦2.5 million and a private ward.

How to Enrol

First, decide which Lagos health insurance scheme fits you. For the private plans, go to the LPHP site at lagoshealthinsure.ng. There, you register, pick a plan, choose an HMO and a hospital, then pay online. For Ilera Eko, regsiter through Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA).

Before you pay, check that your preferred hospital is on the plan’s list. Also read what the plan doesn’t cover, because treatment outside your package or above its limits still comes from your pocket.

What Happens After December 31?

The governor called the period until December 31 a moratorium. He also set up an enforcement task force, although he stressed, “I don’t want a horse whip for anybody.”

Employers should act now too, since the Lagos health insurance rule covers every employer and worker, not just individuals. So the smart move is simple: pick a plan this month, keep your card safe, and start 2027 covered.
