Nigerian singer, filmmaker and politician Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has opened up about how losing the 2023 election led him to seek God’s direction and reflect on his purpose.
Banky W shared his experience on Instagram as he marked his first anniversary in pastoral ministry in the United States. He explained that the election defeat inspired him in many ways but also left him heartbroken.
Banky W Turns to God After Election Defeat
The singer recalled how he turned to God for direction after the election and surrendered his plans as he sought clarity about his next assignment.
He explained that he took the pieces of his broken heart back to God and surrendered to His will after the dust had settled.
Banky W said he had asked God whether his future lay in leadership or ministry, entertainment or business, and the marketplace or ministry.

However, he later realised that God had never asked him to choose between those paths. Instead, he understood that he could pursue all of them as part of his assignment.
He added that God was not trying to put him in a box but was expanding his assignment.

Reflecting on the first anniversary of his pastoral ministry, Banky W said the experience had reminded him that what appears to be the end of a story could mark the beginning of a new chapter.
He acknowledged that the 2023 election did not go as he had hoped but said he had come to understand that God’s plans for his life were bigger than his own expectations.
Banky W contested the 2023 House of Representatives election for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, he lost to Thaddeus Attah of the Labour Party.
