A UK coroner has ruled that three Nigerian sisters died by suicide. Officials recovered their bodies from the sea off Brighton in southern England in May.

Senior coroner Penelope Schofield delivered the conclusion at Woodvale Coroner’s Court on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The inquest identified Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31. The sisters travelled from west London to Brighton before their deaths.

As earlier reported by NBG Africa, the three sisters were found near Madeira Drive in the early hours of May 13. Emergency services recovered the sisters near Madeira Drive on May 13. Sussex Police had said there was no evidence of third party involvement or criminality.

Brighton Inquest: What the Coroner Found

The coroner said they entered the water in the dark during difficult sea conditions. Post-mortem examinations confirmed drowning as the cause of death. Toxicology tests found no drugs or alcohol. The inquest heard no evidence of violence.

The hearing also examined their final movements. The inquest heard that the sisters travelled to Birmingham before going to Brighton. They visited an area associated with the death of their mother in 2010. They travelled by taxi to Brighton and arrived near the seafront at about 10:21 p.m.

CCTV showed the sisters near the seafront before they entered the water. They were last seen alive at about 2:42 a.m. on May 13. The coroner said they entered the sea in darkness despite adverse conditions and could not swim. However, Schofield said the court could not establish why they chose Brighton.

Their father, Joseph Jacobson, attended the hearing by video link. In a written tribute, he described losing all three daughters as a heartbreak beyond anything he could have imagined. He said he could not understand why their lives ended so suddenly.

The Brighton inquest now formally concludes the death inquiry. Sussex Police said in September that its investigation had ended and the matter had passed to the coroner for inquest. Nevertheless, many questions about the sisters’ private lives and final decisions remain unanswered.
