The Federal Government has proposed dates for Nigeria’s 2027 national examinations, this includes NECO and WAEC. It also introduced a new requirement for private schools.
Under the directive, schools seeking approval as examination centres must ensure that at least 75% of their teachers hold licences from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). The deadline for compliance is December 11, 2026. Schools that fail to meet the requirement will not be approved to serve as examination centres.
The decisions followed a September 30 meeting involving the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, examination bodies and private school representatives.
Proposed 2027 JAMB, WAEC and NECO Timetable
According to the communiqué, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination is scheduled for March 15–25, 2027. Results are expected in March.
The National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination is proposed for April 1–14, with results expected in August.
Meanwhile, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination will run from May 11 to June 18, 2027. The proposed results release is August.
The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations are scheduled for June and July.
However, the communiqué states that the examination bodies must confirm the proposed dates. Authorities will also announce registration dates later.

Private Schools Face 75% TRCN Licensing Rule
The new requirement directs every accredited examination centre to ensure that at least 75% of its teachers hold valid TRCN licences. For example, a school with 20 teachers must have at least 15 licensed teachers to meet the threshold.
The authorities will verify compliance and upload the details of qualifying schools to a designated registration portal. Schools that miss the deadline risk losing approval to conduct any of the listed examinations.
The directive could put pressure on private schools with several unlicensed teachers. School owners may need to review staff records and help eligible teachers complete their licensing requirements before December 11.
WAEC, NECO Overlap Raises Scheduling Questions
The proposed timetable also presents a potential challenge for candidates sitting both WAEC and NECO examinations. The two examinations will overlap between May 11 and May 14, 2027, based on the dates listed in the communiqué.
This overlap could complicate preparations for students, schools and examination administrators. The examination bodies may need to consider scheduling arrangements before confirming their final timetables.
The communiqué does not clarify how authorities will handle schools whose teachers are still awaiting licence approval. Candidates, parents and school administrators should therefore await official confirmation from the examination bodies before making firm plans.
