Zanzibar police have confirmed that US influencer Ashlee Jenae died by suicide as a result of mental distress.
The 31-year-old was celebrating her birthday and her fresh engagement in Zanzibar, Tanzania. She was there on vacation with her 45-year-old fiancé, Joseph Isaac “Joe” McCann.
She was found unconscious in her villa at a luxury resort, and they rushed her to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
According to a statement reported by local media, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations Zuberi Chembera said investigators found evidence that Jenae had struggled with emotional distress related to personal challenges.
Chembera stated that investigators reviewed text messages exchanged between Jenae and her fiancé and found repeated complaints about her personal circumstances.
“Through witness statements and analysis of communication devices belonging to the deceased and her fiancé, we established that she had been experiencing mental distress. SMS exchanges showed repeated complaints regarding her life circumstances,” he said.

Chembera added that investigators worked with other agencies during the inquiry and found no evidence that anyone caused her death. Authorities have now closed the case.
Initial documents released in April listed cerebral hypoxia caused by strangulation and suffocation as the immediate cause of death.
Police also revealed that Jenae and her fiancé, Joe McCann, had a disagreement before her death. Following the incident, hotel management placed the couple in separate rooms.
McCann described her death as “an incomprehensible tragedy”.
Jenae, born Ashly Robinson, died at the age of 31 while vacationing in Zanzibar, Tanzania, with McCann. The couple had travelled to the island to celebrate her birthday on April 5.
