Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, in Yobe State, is mourning two daughters, a medical doctor and a pharmacist, who died within two days of each other.
The sisters, Dr Hadiyah Usman Abdullahi and Pharm. Aidah Usman Abdullahi, were twins, according to Blueprint. Both reportedly died of complications associated with sickle cell disease.
How FMC Nguru MD’s twin daughters died within 48 hours
Hadiyah died on Friday, October 2, after about a week at FMC Nguru, where she was receiving treatment following a sickle cell crisis. She was buried the same day after funeral prayers at the Emir’s Palace.
Her twin, Aidah, had been receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital around the same period. She reportedly recovered and was discharged.
On Sunday, October 4, Aidah visited her sister’s grave. Unfortunately, she reportedly collapsed shortly afterwards and was rushed to hospital, where she died. FMC Nguru confirmed her death on its official Facebook page, calling her “the second twin” of Professor Usman.

Condolences pour in for the family
Microbiologist Fatima Kagu reportedly announced the deaths on Facebook on October 4, and prayers and messages of sympathy followed.
However, her post did not say how the sisters died. The sickle cell detail came from later reports, which describe it as reported rather than officially confirmed.
The loss of two health professionals within days has left the family, their colleagues and the wider medical community in mourning.
Who is Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman?
Professor Usman is a Professor of Gynaecological Oncology and Reproductive Health. She was the first female consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist produced by the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
She became the fourth Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of FMC Nguru in November 2022, the first woman to hold the post since the centre’s establishment.
The Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, is a federal government hospital in Yobe State, in north-eastern Nigeria.
For a mother who has spent her career in medicine, the loss of the twin daughters, both in healthcare themselves and within such a short timeframe, is a heavy one.
