Just weeks ago, Carter Efe was celebrating one of the biggest moments of his career.

The Nigerian comedian and streamer had secured admission into Kai Cenat’s Streamer University. He earned a place in one of the internet’s most talked-about creator programmes after competing with thousands of applicants worldwide.

For Carter, the acceptance meant more than international recognition. It offered a chance to learn from some of the biggest names in streaming. It also gave him an opportunity to build new connections and represent Nigeria on a global stage.

Then everything changed. Shortly after announcing his admission, Carter revealed that he could not obtain a United States visa. In an emotional video, he appealed to Nigerians for help. He specifically asked people to help him reach Seyi Tinubu, hoping someone could intervene before the programme began.

“I got admission into Kai Cenat’s Streamer University, but I still don’t have a U.S. visa,” he said.

His appeal quickly spread across social media.

Many fans sympathised with him and hoped the issue would be resolved. Others said his experience reflected the challenges many Nigerians face when applying for visas, even after receiving legitimate invitations.

Afrobeats star Davido also reacted. Speaking during a recent interview, the singer described Carter’s admission as an achievement in itself. He encouraged the content creator not to lose hope despite the setback.

“Whether he makes it to America or not, he’s got the recognition already,” Davido said. He also noted that obtaining a U.S. visa has become increasingly difficult.

Streamer University officially opened on July 15. Selected creators from different countries arrived for orientation and the start of the programme. Carter was not among them.

Kai Cenat later addressed the situation during a livestream. The American streamer confirmed that Carter could not attend because of the visa issue. He said his team had tried to help but could not resolve the problem before the programme started.

His comments ended days of speculation about whether Carter would arrive late or join the programme after orientation. Instead, the visa process brought his journey to an unexpected end.

The disappointment has sparked a wider conversation about the barriers many African creators still face. Platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Twitch have made it easier to build a global audience. Travelling to international events, however, still depends on visa approvals and immigration policies that creators cannot control.

For many fans, that is what makes Carter’s story so frustrating.

He overcame the hardest challenge by earning admission into one of the world’s most competitive creator programmes. Yet he missed the opportunity because he could not secure the travel documents he needed. His story serves as a reminder that global recognition does not always guarantee global access.

For Carter Efe, the obstacle was never talent. It was the visa that stood between him and one of the biggest opportunities of his career.
