Nigerian artist Temilade ‘Tems’ Openiyi has been featured on many of former U.S. President Barack Obama’s summer playlists, so while it was a massive honour to be the only African artist in attendance, it was no surprise that she was invited to perform at the opening of his presidential library.

She was part of a slew of renowned singers like John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder who performed at the event.

Tems wore a floor-length red dress and belted out her rendition of her hit track, “Me & You”. Sadly, she made a mistake and apologised for it. She called one of his daughters Sandra, rather than Sasha. Tems then went on X to apologise, saying she was nervous. Who wouldn’t be singing with such dignitaries in attendance?

The Obama Presidential Center and Library officially opened in Chicago, celebrated with a grand opening ceremony that featured a guest list of notable figures, including three former U.S. presidents, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, as well as dignitaries like former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama highlighted the centre, a tribute to their eight years in the White House, which has been in planning since Barack Obama’s presidency ended a decade ago. Notably absent was current President Donald Trump, who has had a contentious relationship with Obama.

The library is located in the Jackson Park neighbourhood on the South Side, where the Obamas lived before their presidency; the 20-acre campus includes various attractions. Visitors can take pictures inside a replica of the Oval Office, designed to reflect its appearance during Obama’s administration. Beyond being a presidential library, the centre provides community-orientated facilities such as a park, playground, basketball court, recording studio, and public library.

Traditionally, US presidential libraries serve as repositories for documents and artefacts associated with the presidential terms, but the Obama Center distinguishes itself by blending the functions of a museum and a community centre, aimed at engaging the public and promoting cultural initiatives.
