Every year on the 4th of May, it’s Met Day. The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts the highly anticipated Met Gala, where A-list celebrities assemble. This year saw the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and the Kardashian-Jenner family. The theme was ‘Costume Art’.
An invite to the Met is a rare privilege. While there weren’t many African talents in attendance, we did spot a few. Here is a breakdown of their looks:
Tyla

Tyla has become a regular at the Met Gala; this is her third year in attendance. While nothing can quite surpass her “sands of time” dress from 2024. This year she wore stunning in custom Valentino that reminded us of a peacock, peep her gorgeous shoes. 10/10.
Anok Yai

The Sudanese-American model channelled a “dark widow” aesthetic in this hooded dress from Balenciaga. Her makeup was the star of the show, featuring crystallised tears that looked like a baroque sculpture brought to life. 10/10
Adut Akech

Adut is heavily pregnant, but that hasn’t stopped her from looking her absolute best in Thom Browne. The black netted fabric looked incredible on her. 9/10
Damson Idris

Damson, why? We’ve seen him look so much better. His black leather Prada jacket and red camisole were just not giving “Met Gala” energy at all. 4/10
Skepta

Skepta’s outfit featured his tattoos and quotes from his song lyrics, essentially turning his body into a canvas. He captured the concept of “costume art” to a T. Loved it! 10/10.
Wisdom Kaye

The king of fashion was there, and his waist was snatched in a metal corset over a suit by Public School founders Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne. The look, had upcycled fabrics sourced from eBay and dramatic parachute pants, perfectly elevating the traditional black suit. 10/10.
