A video clip which captures why Nigeria’s former vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, decided to give up alcohol has recently gone viral.
He narrated this life-changing experience, which occurred during his service in the justice sector of the UN mission in Mogadishu. He explained we that he never saw anything wrong with drinking alcohol because Jesus turned water into wine. He also had other theological backings of people drinking from the Bible.
He narrated to the participants of the Biazo Leadership and Empowerment Summit in Maryland, USA, “I like my red wine once in a while, and then I like my beer.”
He saw things from a different perspective after an encounter with his colleagues one day.

“On this particular Sunday, I was coming back from the fellowship where I had preached… I was just hoping to buy two cans of Heineken and go to my room and read my Bible,” he said while the participants laughed.
“There were many restaurants in the UN compound in Mogadishu. So, I went to this particular restaurant, and as I walked in, I saw many of my colleagues from different countries. They were drinking.”
According to Osinbajo, his colleagues quickly hid their drinks when they saw him approaching. Confused, he walked up to one of his colleagues from Denmark and asked why he was hiding his whisky. The Danish man replied, “You are the priest, and we cannot be drinking around the priest.” The participants laughed again at the irony.
Osinbajo said that was pivotal for him. He explained that the scenario made him understand better what “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient” meant.
“And from that day, I’ve not touched alcohol,” he said.
In reaction to the video, some found it funny and relatable. Many have talked about influence, personal decisions, and responsibilities. Others took the opportunity to reopen conversations about his time as the vice president.
