The Nigerian Man With a Stake in London’s Gatwick Airport – Meet Adebayo Ogunlesi, His Wife, and Children

Adebayo Ogunlesi is a true Nigerian success story in the diaspora. He has built a massive global business through smart moves and hard work.

According to Forbes, his net worth has reached approximately $2.5 billion, ranking him among Africa’s top billionaires. His wealth comes from smart infrastructure investments.

Ogunlesi was born in 1953 in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, Nigeria. His father, Theophilus Oladipo Ogunlesi, was the first Nigerian professor of medicine at the University of Ibadan.

Ogunlesi received his secondary school education at King’s College in Lagos. He moved abroad for his tertiary education at Oxford University (Lincoln College), where he earned a B.A. with First Class Honors in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He then obtained a J.D. (Doctor of Law) from Harvard Law School and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1979.

He worked as a clerk for a U.S. Supreme Court justice and started his career as a lawyer in New York. He joined a major bank called Credit Suisse, where he rose quickly to senior roles and led major deals for 23 years. Before he left Credit Suisse, he served as Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Client Officer of the Investment Banking Division, and head of the global energy and investment banking groups.

In 2006, he co-founded Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). Soon after, GIP grew massive under his leadership. His team invested in airports, ports, and energy projects worldwide. They bought stakes in places such as London Gatwick Airport(49.99%), Edinburgh Airport, and London City Airport.

In 2024, BlackRock bought his firm in a $12.5 billion deal. According to Forbes, GIP managed over $100 billion in assets before its acquisition.

Ogunlesi retained his position as Chairman and CEO of GIP, which is now a BlackRock subsidiary. He also became a Senior Managing Director at BlackRock, as well as a member of its Global Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Adebayo Ogunlesi serves on the boards of OpenAI (joined in 2025), Topgolf Callaway Brands, Kosmos Energy, and Terminal Investment Limited. He has lectured at Harvard and Yale and sits on advisory boards for Harvard Law and Business Schools.

In 1985, Ogunlesi married Dr. Amelia Quist-Ogunlesi, a British-born, now-retired optometrist.

Amelia serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, The Central Park Conservancy, The Couture Council of The Museum at FIT, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Partnership to End Addiction.

Tolu Ogunlesi’s Sons

They have two sons together named Geoffrey and Carl.

Geoffrey Ogunlesi is the CEO and founder of a music management company called the Ogunlesi Group, based in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Before creating the Ogunlesi Group, he worked in the music industry for years. According to his LinkedIn page, he worked as an Artist and Repertoire (A&R) consultant for 300 Entertainment from 2014 to 2022. He is engaged to Jennifer Meyer, an American jewelry designer.

Carl Ogunlesi is a music producer and maintains a lower profile than his brother.

The whole family serves on the board of the Ogunlesi Family Foundation. The foundation supports education, the arts, African art museums, and addiction recovery. Carl is the president of the foundation, and Geoffrey is the secretary.

Nigerians refer to Adebayo Ogunlesi as “The Man Who Bought Gatwick Airport.” Burna Boy even gave him a shout-out in the song “Wonderful” for his hard work.
