Nigerian actress, Lilian Afegbai, has publicly apologised after criticising the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for denying her nomination.

Following the release of the 2026 AMVCA nominee list in March, the actress reacted angrily to the award organisers over her exclusion.

Afegbai stated that nominators should have picked her for her performance as Idia in the film ‘To Kill A Monkey‘.

She explained that her reaction stemmed from pain. Afegbai said she had come a long way in the movie industry and, for a long time, she felt invisible. The movie To Kill a Monkey, in which she featured, made her feel seen and recognized for her craft, especially because viewers praised her for her stellar performance.

“That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill a Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me.”

“Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded.” She shared that she had felt invisible for a long time, and her role in To Kill a Monkey felt like a big moment in her career.

“When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt and entitlement. I was wrong, and I am sorry.”
