A Lagos-based woman, Osarobo Odigie, has initiated legal action against popular TikTok streamer Peller. She sued him over alleged defamation, cyber harassment, and invasion of privacy following an incident at a lounge in Lagos.

The case has caused continued attention on the legal consequences of online behaviour, especially the misuse of social media platforms against individuals.

According to a letter dated March 10, 2026, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 6 at Folixxx Lounge in Lagos. Odigie was reportedly at the lounge to purchase food when she was frightened by a loud outburst from the influencer.

Punch News reported that after she moved away, Peller allegedly confronted her and instructed her to “shut up”. He continued to verbally abuse her, using derogatory and insulting words in the Yoruba language.

Her legal team further alleges that the streamer recorded the confrontation without her consent. He didn’t stop there. He also shared the video across multiple platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

The video reportedly went viral and attracted thousands of comments. Many of the comments allegedly repeated the insults and led to cyberbullying and threats against Odigie. Odigie says the incident caused her emotional distress, reputational damage, and concerns for her personal safety.

She is now seeking N395 million in damages, alongside a public apology and the removal of the content.

Beyond the dispute, this case highlights the seriousness of defamation and cyber harassment under Nigerian law.

Defamation involves making false statements that harm a person’s reputation. It is both a civil wrong and, in some cases, a criminal offence in Nigeria.

It can be in the form of spoken words (slander) and published content (libel) or, in this context, social media posts. All and any of these can form the basis of a lawsuit if they expose a person to ridicule, hatred, or contempt.

But many, like Peller, don’t know this and take it with levity.

In addition, the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024 specifically addresses online harassment and bullying. Under the law, any person who intentionally sends messages or posts content online that is grossly offensive, false, or intended to cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, insult, or injury can face serious penalties.

Convictions may result in fines, imprisonment, or both. The Act also provides legal backing for victims to seek redress where online actions lead to emotional harm or threats to safety.

According to Attorney.media, influencers and content creators, due to their wide reach, may face even greater scrutiny.

Content that goes viral can intensify harm quickly, which can expose victims to mass harassment and long-term reputational damage. As seen in this case, recording and publishing videos without consent, especially when accompanied by abusive commentary, can trigger both defamation claims and cyber harassment charges.

Although this case hasn’t been concluded, it serves as a cautionary example in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital space. Social media may offer a platform for expression, but it does not exempt users from the law.

Ultimately, respecting people’s privacy and reputation is essential, and failure to do so can result in legal prosecution and financial consequences.
