According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), this will be the first AFCON finals meeting between Nigeria and Tanzania since 1980, when the Super Eagles won 3–1 on their way to lifting their first continental title.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, enter the tournament as one of the favourites to top Group C, which also includes Tunisia and Uganda. Tanzania, however, are expected to provide stiff resistance as they look to make a statement in their opening match.

Both teams come into the match with fully fit squads. Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle confirmed that all his players are available, while Tanzania boss Miguel Gamondi also reported no injury concerns during his press conference.

Nigeria’s squad is dominated by Europe-based stars, with only Amas Obasogie and Stanley Nwabali playing their club football in Africa (Tanzania and South Africa respectively). In contrast, Tanzania’s team is largely home-based, with 19 players from the Tanzanian Premier League and only nine playing abroad.

Former Nigerian international Ogenyi Onazi has cautioned the Super Eagles against underestimating Tanzania, insisting the opening game will not be easy.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen admitted that the team still feels the pain of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and sees AFCON as an opportunity to make amends.

He added that expectations remain high, but the squad is motivated rather than pressured.
