The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda is mourning the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV. He reportedly died at 34 after an illness on Thursday, August 27.
King Oyo, who became monarch at just three, spent more than three decades on the throne. His death has sparked tributes across Uganda and beyond.
The young monarch succeeded his late father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995. His coronation later earned him recognition as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. 
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV
King Oyo was born on April 16, 1992, into Uganda’s Tooro royal family. His parents were King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.
His father died on August 26, 1995. Consequently, three-year-old Prince Oyo became heir to the throne.
He ascended the Tooro throne on September 12, 1995. His coronation subsequently entered the Guinness World Records.
At the time, he became the world’s youngest reigning monarch. He remained a prominent symbol of Tooro culture throughout his reign.
According to the statement, King Oyo died at 34 after an illness. Reports said he passed away in the United States. The announcement was reportedly made by the kingdom’s traditional prime minister, Rwomiire.
King Oyo: A Reign That Began at Three
King Oyo inherited the throne at an unusually young age. At 2 am on September 12, 1995, a week after his father, the late king’s burial, rituals to hand over the reins of power began.
At 4 am, Rukidi IV was crowned amidst a jubilant crowd and entered the Karuziika palace at Kyaro Nyamunyaka as the new ruler of the Kingdom of Tooro. He was served his first meal as king, made from millet dough. Rukidi IV became the youngest modern monarch at just 3 years old.
His reign therefore attracted international attention from childhood. Despite his age, the young monarch grew into his responsibilities over time. He later became involved in cultural and community activities.
His reign also coincided with renewed interest in preserving Tooro’s royal heritage. Consequently, his death represents a significant loss for the kingdom.
King Oyo was not married. A queen consort (Omugo) was frequently a topic of discussion among subjects and family members, including the Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, while he was alive.
According to the statement announcing his death. However, the kingdom said he left behind a son.

Crown Succession Assured
The Tooro Kingdom has moved to reassure its people following the monarch’s death. Rwomiire said the crown would continue despite King Oyo’s passing.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”
The statement is expected to ease concerns about succession within the centuries-old monarchy. The kingdom will formally provide further details about the prince in accordance with its traditions.
A Legacy Beyond His Years
King Oyo’s reign lasted almost 31 years, making him one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional rulers.
He became king as a child but carried the institution into adulthood. His journey also made him an important figure in discussions about youth leadership. His reign reflected Tooro’s efforts to preserve its history, identity and cultural traditions.
The kingdom itself dates back more than two centuries. It was established as a monarchy in 1822. King Oyo’s death has therefore created a significant moment in Tooro’s history.
Tributes have continued to pour in for the late monarch and his family. Condolences have also been extended to Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, Princess Royal Ruth Komuntale and the wider Tooro royal family.
King Oyo leaves behind a legacy shaped by youth, tradition and an extraordinary rise to the throne.
