Popular Kano Political Commentator Dan Shagamu Killed as 2027 Electoral Campaign Begins

Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, a well-known Kano-based social media political commentator, has been killed at his home.

Reports claim that on September 9, Dan Shagamu’s body was found in a pool of blood. Amnesty International Nigeria confirmed the killing, stating that he was “brutally slaughtered after being overpowered by his killers.”

Dan Shagamu operated under the brand Dan-shagamu International and was known for his videos and commentary on political, religious, and community issues in Kano and beyond.

Dan Shagamu had a solid, engaged regional audience concentrated in Kano and northern Nigeria, especially among Hausa-speaking viewers interested in political, religious, and community commentary.

He built a significant following and influence through his outspoken posts on social media. 

Details surrounding the exact circumstances of the attack remain limited.

Reactions from Followers on Dan Shagamu’s Death

His followers and the wider online community have been dominated by shock and grief. Many have commented with calls for justice.

Most of the responses include the Islamic phrase

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un” (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return).

They offer prayers for his soul and express sorrow over the manner of his death. Many have also described the killing as brutal, with some referencing reports that he was “slaughtered.” 

Many other comments link his death to his outspoken political commentary and criticism of the government, framing him as someone who “said his truth.”

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring those responsible to justice. The organisation also noted rising concerns about politically related threats and intimidation as elections approach.

As at the time of this report, the Kano State Police Command had not issued a detailed public statement on the investigation.
