Talk about cinematic record-breaking. Funke Akindele‘s film “Behind The Scenes” became the first Nollywood film to reach ₦2 billion at the box office, making history in the African film industry.

According to the movie’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, the accomplishment verified ₦2,103,039,706 in total ticket sales. The movie had already made ₦1 billion before reaching ₦1.77 billion, making it one of the most profitable Nollywood productions.  Now, it has exceeded ₦2 billion.

‘Behind The Scenes’ is now the highest-grossing Nollywood film in Africa and the highest-grossing Nollywood movie in the UK and Ireland thanks to its record-breaking achievement.

Funke is the first director to have the top spot at the African box office for three years in a row, which is considered an exceptional accomplishment in the history of the continent’s cinema. She is now highest grossing African filmmaker.

The film centres on the dangers of ‘black tax’ and features Scarlet Gomez in the lead role, alongside a distinguished ensemble cast that includes Funke Akindele herself, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, and Kamo State.
