Tony Elumelu has taken a nostalgic look at his early business days after finding an old business card. The Nigerian businessman shared the card from his time as a photocopier salesperson.
The discovery reminded him of the lessons he learnt before becoming a prominent entrepreneur.
Elumelu reflected on the discipline, resilience and determination that shaped his early career. He also used the moment to encourage others to value the foundations of their careers. 
Tony Elumelu Revisits His Early Career Years
Elumelu said he recently stumbled upon the old business card from his early working days. At the time, he worked as a salesperson selling photocopiers.
The faded card carried his name and identified him as a sales executive. It also listed Precissa Sales Limited, where he worked during that period.
For Elumelu, the discovery brought back memories of his younger years. He remembered himself as a determined sales representative eager to build a career.

‘Young, Hungry Sales Rep’ – Tony Elumelu Says
Reflecting on that period, Elumelu described himself as a “young, hungry sales rep”. He said those early experiences taught him important lessons about succeeding in business.
“Those lessons have stayed with me over the years,” he said.
According to him, resilience and negotiation remain important parts of his approach to business. He also credited those experiences with shaping how he engages with customers today. The businessman’s reflection highlights the value of learning through practical experience.
After all, many successful careers begin with ordinary jobs and modest opportunities.
Lessons From the Foundation
Elumelu also used the discovery to share a broader message about personal growth. He believes people often overlook the importance of the work they do early in their careers.
“It’s also a reminder that who you become tomorrow is often shaped by the foundation you lay today,” he said.
He stressed the importance of discipline, hard work and consistency. According to him, those qualities matter even when nobody is watching. His message encourages young professionals to remain committed despite slow progress.
Furthermore, he reminded his followers that success rarely happens overnight. Instead, consistent effort can gradually create the foundation for bigger achievements.

Elumelu ended his reflection with a simple message to people building their careers.
“Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep executing,” he wrote.
The businessman’s old card therefore became more than a piece of paper. It offered a glimpse into a much earlier chapter of his professional journey. Interestingly, the contact details on the card are no longer valid.
“As for the phone number and address on the card? Long gone,” Elumelu added.
The discovery ultimately served as a reminder of how far determination can take someone.
