Nigerians have turned online mockery into overwhelming support for graduate Felix Madumere, popularly known as Felix_the_SUG on X.
Photos from his final-year project defence recently went viral, attracting ridicule from some social media users. However, the reactions soon changed after details of his difficult university journey emerged.
Felix revealed that severe financial hardship delayed his graduation from Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike (FUNAI). 
His story touched Nigerians, who rallied behind him and raised over ₦10 million to celebrate his perseverance.
Felix Madumere’s Struggles at FUNAI
Felix reportedly faced serious financial challenges throughout his time at the university. To survive, he took on several jobs while pursuing his education.
He reportedly hawked goods, washed clothes and fetched water for fellow students. At some point, he reportedly slept in classrooms because he could not afford accommodation. His schoolmate, @mercy_ninian, also shared details of the difficulties he endured.
“If you know him, you won’t catch cruise with him,” she wrote.
She explained that Felix worked tirelessly to support himself while studying.
“This boy will fetch water, wash other students’ clothes, hawk peanuts, sleep in classrooms,” she added.
His financial struggles eventually affected his academic performance. Consequently, the university asked him to withdraw after he failed to meet the required CGPA.

Felix Madumere: Course Mates Attest to His He Refused to Give Up
Despite the setback, Felix refused to abandon his dream of earning a university degree. According to his schoolmate, financial difficulties initially prevented him from paying his fees. His struggle to combine academics with multiple jobs also affected his grades.
She explained:
“He wasn’t able to pay his school fees the first time he got admission and couldn’t meet up with the CGPA.”
As a result, the institution withdrew him from the programme.
Nevertheless, Felix picked himself up and sat for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination again. He eventually secured admission into the same university and continued his studies.
“Still, he wrote JAMB and came back,” his schoolmate said.
She also praised his determination, adding, “Kudos to Felix fr.”
Another school mate, Orji Moses Ogbuagu wrote:
“Congratulations to you Felix your tenacity and perseverance in school then was top-notch.
This is my lodge and it was just a stone through to his own.. In 2019 I was in 300L and he was supposed to be in200L bt he was withdrawn.”

Nigerians Turn Mockery Into Support
After Felix’s story gained attention, public sentiment quickly changed. Instead of continuing the mockery, Nigerians began celebrating his resilience.
Within hours, supporters reportedly donated more than ₦4 million towards his welfare. The donations highlighted the impact of his journey on people across the country.
For many Nigerians, Felix’s story represents determination in the face of overwhelming challenges. His experience also shows the difficult choices some students make to remain in school.
From hawking peanuts to washing clothes and sleeping in classrooms, his journey was far from easy. Yet, he eventually crossed the finish line.
His viral project defence photos may have started with mockery. However, his story has ended with encouragement, financial support and widespread admiration.
