Nigerian actress Eucharia Anunobi opened up about the painful childhood challenges she faced while growing up, especially the strong opposition from her father, before she rose to fame.

During an interview on the Honest Bunch podcast, she shared how she struggled to pursue her education and follow a career path she believed in.

She revealed that her father did not value educating a girl child because he thought girls would eventually get married and leave their families. Despite having the financial means, he refused to fund her schooling.

Anunobi said tensions grew when she rejected the career path her father had planned for her. She recalled a painful period when her father locked her inside a room for six months because she would not complete the employment forms.

She said: “My father locked me up in my room for six months because I refused to fill out employment forms he wanted me to submit for an office job. He passed the forms under the door after locking me in the room and insisted I complete them. I still refused to sign it.

“He did not support my education. He didn’t pay my school fees. What is even a girl child? After all, they’re going to get married. He unofficially disowned me and did not approve of my acting career. I had to sneak out of the house and sometimes jump the fence to attend auditions. Modelling became my means of financing my education and supporting my studies”.

The actress refused to complete the forms because she did not want the job. She stayed firm in choosing her own path, which angered her father.

According to her, the forms slid under the door while she remained trapped in the room, yet she still refused to sign them.

She said: “Winning my first award in London for the film Glamour Girls was a turning point for me. When I returned home with the award and presented it to my father, our relationship improved. After seeing my achievement, my father blessed me when I returned home.
