In Nigeria’s entertainment industry, it’s not uncommon to hear celebrities introduced as “Doctor”. In many cases, these titles come from honorary doctorate degrees awarded by universities in recognition of influence, achievements, or contributions to society.
This topic began trending again after a video of Nollywood actress Eucharia Anunobi, insisting on being addressed as “Doctor” while introducing herself in a podcast, resurfaced online.
Interestingly, while many celebrities receive honorary degrees, a few Nigerian public figures have actually put in the academic work to earn their doctorates. Here are some of them.
1. Eniola Olaniyan

Though he has been largely absent from our screens in recent years, Nollywood actor Eniola Olaniyan has shifted his focus towards academics.
He holds a PhD in Meteorology and Climate Science, which he obtained from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). His move from acting to academia surprises a lot of fans, but it shows that life after the spotlight can sometimes lead to a completely intellectually fulfilling path.
2. Doyin Hassan

Actor, producer and director Doyin Hassan became well known for his roles in several gospel films before gradually stepping away from the movie scene.
These days, Hassan has turned his attention to academics and is currently working as a lecturer at Conestoga College in Ontario, Canada. He earned his PhD in Business Administration from Lagos State University, adding a strong academic achievement to his already diverse career.
3. Eucharia Anunobi

Veteran Nollywood actress and evangelist Eucharia Anunobi recently found herself at the centre of online conversations after a video of her introduction in a podcast went viral.
During the introduction, she asked that she be addressed as “Doctor”, explaining that she holds a PhD and emphasising that she worked hard for it, and not just an honorary award.
Conclusion
While honorary doctorate degrees remain common among public figures, a number of these Nigerian celebrities have gone the extra mile by pursuing advanced academic qualifications outside their careers.
Their journeys serve as proof that success in entertainment or the arts does not have to come at the expense of education.
