1. Idris Elba

Sir Idrissa Akuna Elba was born on September 6, 1972,  in the London Borough of Hackney. He was born to Winston Elba, a Sierra Leonean man and Eve, a Ghanaian woman.

Elba credits his big break to the magazine company, ‘The Stage’. He is known for his roles in films such as ‘Luther’ and ‘The Wire’. He has also starred in films like ‘Beasts of No Nation‘, ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom‘, and ‘Thor‘.

Idris Elba won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) TV Award for Best Actor for ‘Luther’ and has received multiple BAFTA nominations. The veteran actor also won a Golden Globe Award for ‘Luther’ and earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for ‘Beasts of No Nation’. 

2. John Boyega

John Adedayo Bamidele Adegboyega was born on March 17, 1992, in Camberwell, London. His parents, Abigail and Samson Adegboyega, are both of Yoruba descent.

He first gained recognition in Britain for his role as a teenage gang leader in the comedy horror film ‘Attack the Block’.

He got an international breakthrough on the set of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, where he played Finn. His role in ‘The Woman King’ also deserves a standing ovation.

Boyega won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2016, a Golden Globe Award for ‘Small Axe’, and has earned a Critics’ Choice Television Award.

3. Daniel Kaluuya

Kaluuya, an actor and thespian, was born on February 24 1989, in London to Ugandan parents. 

He started to write plays at the age of nine and began his acting career as a teenager in improvisational theatre. His Oscar-winning performance in ‘Judas and the Black Messiah,’ which also earned him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, cemented his place among Hollywood’s elite.

Daniel Kaluuya also acted in ‘Get Out’ and was the best friend of T’Challa in  ‘Black Panther ’

4. David Oyelowo

Oyelowo was born on April 1 1976, in Oxford to Nigerian parents. His father, Stephen Oyelowo, is from Oyo State, South West Nigeria, while his mother is Igbo from South East Nigeria. Oyelowo is a prince of the Yoruba people in Nigeria, where his grandfather was a king of a part of Oyo State called Awe.

His teacher suggested that he become an actor while he studied theatre studies at City and Islington College. Now, he has acted in many films and TV series. He is especially known for his role as Martin Luther King Jr. In ‘Selma’.

Oyelowo has acted in ‘The Butler’, ‘Gringo’ and played the Prince Seretse in ‘A United Kingdom’.

He earned a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination, won an NAACP Image Award for ‘Selma’ and earned a Golden Globe Award nomination.

5. Michaela Coel

Michaela Ewuraba Boakye-Collinson was born on October 1, 1987, in East London to Ghanaian parents.   

She created and starred in the E4 sitcom ‘Chewing Gum’ from 2015 to 2017. The role earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance.

Coel also created and led the BBC One/HBO series ‘I May Destroy You’, which won her the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 2021. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for the same series.

6. Adjoa Andoh

Adjoa Aiboom Helen Andoh was born on January 14 1963, in Clifton, Bristol, England. Her English mother was a teacher, and her Ghanaian father was a journalist and musician.

Adjoa Andoh appeared with a graceful aura in productions like ‘Bridgerton’, ‘Doctor Who’, and ‘Casualty’. She has received multiple nominations from the Black British Theatre Awards for her stage and screen performances.

She is also recognised for her acclaimed theatre work and contributions to British drama.

7. Cynthia  Erivo

Cynthia Chinasaokwu Onyedinmanasu Owezuke Amarachukwu Echimino Erivo, not so many names for a star, was born on January 8 1987, to Igbo-Nigerian immigrant parents in Stockwell, London, England.

Erivo played the wicked witch in ‘Wicked’, Harriet the saviour in ‘Harriet’, blunt Belle  ‘Widows’, and Darlene the Singer in ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress nomination for Harriet and has earned multiple BAFTA nominations.

She also won a Tony Award, a Grammy Award, and an Emmy Award, achieving EGOT status.

8. Aaron Pierre

Aaron Stone Pierre was born in London on June 7 1994. He has Curaçaoan, Jamaican, and Sierra Leonean roots.

Pierre has appeared in projects like ‘The Underground Railroad’, ‘Old’, and ‘Rebel Ridge’. He is the voice of Mufasa in ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’. Pierre has earned recognition from the British Independent Film Awards for his performances.
