Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, a Nigerian man, was allegedly crowned as “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London” (the Igbo king of East London).

Members of the Nigerian community shared videos and images of the coronation online, saying they crowned Eziko as their king.

However, there has not been any official statement confirming this coronation, instead, South African authorities have rejected the coronation and tagged it deeply disrespectful.

The traditional leadership authorities have said that the title has no legal or cultural recognition in South Africa. The situation has also led them to call for government action against it.

Many South Africans and official authorities are upset about the situation, even though it hasn’t been fully confirmed.

South African authorities and traditional leaders like the AmaRharhabe Kingdom, the Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, CONTRALESA, and Rolesa, along with leaders like Oscar Mabuyane, have all spoken against it.

They say that setting up a new kingship system outside the official one would be illegal. They added that it would also go against South Africa’s laws and traditions. The AmaRharhabe Kingdom, the prominent Xhosa kingdom in the Eastern Cape, has clearly said it has nothing to do with the reported coronation and does not recognise it.

Leaders like Nkosi Siseko Maqoma and Prince Banzi Tyali spoke on behalf of King Jonguxolo Sandile in a report by DailyDispatch. They said that a Nigerian man crowned king in South Africa has no power or authority. The authorities added that if the reports are true, it would amount to an attempt to disrespect.

However, the Nigerian Consulate has stepped in to condemn the situation. Alexander Ajayi, the Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria to South Africa, made it clear that the act does not represent Nigeria. He added that it does not represent the Nigerian government or Nigerians living abroad.
