If there’s one thing about Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini popularly known as Doja Cat, it’s she doesn’t pretend, and right now, her complicated relationship with her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is back in the spotlight.
At the centre of it all is a story that feels less like celebrity drama and more like something painfully human.
Who Is Dumisani Dlamini?

Dumisani Dlamini is a South African actor and dancer best known for playing the role of Crocodile on ‘Sarafina!’
During a tour to the United States in the 1990s as a part of Mbongeni Ngema’s cast and crew, Dlamini met painter and clothing designer Deborah Sawyer and had a relationship with her. A relationship that produced his son Rawyer and daughter, Doja Cat.
After the tour, he returned to South Africa and Deborah stayed in America with her two kids.
In 2023, Dlamini paid a bride price for his wife Ophelia Mulela, and the couple held a private ceremony in Soweto, South Africa.
The Father and Daugher Relationship

Doja has been open for years about feeling abandoned, repeatedly calling her father a “deadbeat” and claiming he’s been largely absent since she was a child. On the other hand, Dlamini has pushed back hard, insisting he never walked away and blaming outside influences for the strained relationship.
Things hit an emotional peak recently when Doja travelled to South Africa, a place deeply tied to her roots. While performing for the South African fans, she broke down in tears, a moment that reflected the weight of reconnecting with that part of her identity.
But the tension didn’t stop there.
In a twist that only added fuel to the fire, Dlamini, her dad, allegedly showed up at her concert, only to be denied entry by her team, who reportedly offered to refund his ticket.

After the concert, he released a statement claiming that he never abandoned any of his children and that he has worked so hard to build a reputation for himself.
“I’ve worked so hard to make my name, which is my reputation… I love my kids, took care of my kids… I never left my kids,” he said. He went further, blaming outside influence for the rift between them: “[Doja] played the cards because of the influence of her mother… that white woman brainwashed my baby.”
According to him, the narrative the world believes isn’t the full story, and he’s determined to clear his name.
Doja Cat’s Response and Reactions
Then there’s Doja’s own response to the situation, which was raw and unfiltered. From publicly calling him out to even making controversial jokes at his expense, she hasn’t exactly taken the “high road”. But for her supporters, that’s not the point. Many people are asking why he is trying to show up now after not being in her life since she was a child.
Long before the fame, the tension between Doja Cat and her father, Dumisani Dlamini was already painfully clear.
In 2010, at just 14, she reportedly reached out to a YouTuber Boris Laursen, in a desperate attempt to find him, writing a message that has since resurfaced online.
“I’m Amala Dlamini and my dad’s name is Dumisani Dlamini. I’m 14 and I haven’t met him yet… I just want to find him… I just want to talk to my daddy.“
In the message, she explained that she only had pictures of him and no direct way to contact him, adding that despite searching, she couldn’t tell which of the many people with his surname were actually related to her. The rawness of that moment paints a clearer picture of why their relationship remains so emotionally charged today.
“A whole grown man can’t show up for his own daughter, but somehow it’s her job to chase him?” someone commented.
Final Take
However, some people feel Doja’s approach is harsh and disrespectful, while others see it as a daughter setting boundaries after years of abandonment. A young woman choosing her peace over a forced reconciliation.
As for her dad, his statement paints a picture of a man defending his name, his reputation, and his version of fatherhood.
At the end of the day, this isn’t just about fame or controversy. It’s about a father and daughter who never quite found their way back to each other, and hopefully, they do soon.
