For years, people have celebrated Ghana for its gold and cocoa. Today, shea butter is stepping into the spotlight as the country’s newest global standout.

The Ghanaian president, John Mahama, has revealed that interest in shea butter and Ghana has surged significantly, with online searches linking Ghana and shea butter exceeding 20 million worldwide in recent weeks.

While speaking at a business conference, the president noted that the spike in attention followed increased international exposure to Ghana’s shea butter industry, particularly after a viral visit to the Shea Butter Museum by international streamer IShowSpeed.

“After he left, there were around 20 million searches for Ghana and shea butter,” he said.

He admitted that he himself was previously unaware of the museum’s existence, highlighting how the moment brought visibility to a key part of Ghana’s cultural identity.

The president said the visibility is a clear example of how the new media can elevate local industries.

During IShowSpeed’s stop in Ghana for his African tour, the streamer visited the shea butter museum, where he got a body massage from ten ladies while they sang a traditional song. His facial expressions during the massage proved he was having a great time.

After the tour, social media attention around Ghana’s shea butter traditions grew rapidly, with many people discovering the product for the first time.

The attention has since caused a broader awareness of Ghana as a hub for natural skincare products and cultural tourism.

The president emphasised the importance of changing global perceptions of Africa and the value of authentic storytelling.

According to him, when African stories are told in relatable and engaging ways, they create opportunities for economic growth while also restoring pride in local culture.

He added that the visit generated unprecedented visibility for the country. In his words, “IShowSpeed did more advertising for Ghana than we could have done.”
