The world has lost a giant and a colossus of African music. In a statement released by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), highlife legend Ebo Taylor died at the Saltpond Hospital on February 7th, a day after the launch of a music festival named after him in Accra and a month after celebrating his 90th birthday.
The Ghanaian legend’s social media posted on his Instagram saying, “Ebo Taylor passed away yesterday, a day after the launch of the Ebo Taylor Music Festival and exactly a month after his 90th birthday, leaving behind an unmatched artistry legacy.” Ebo Taylor, your light will never fade.”
Tributes have been pouring in from around the world commiserating with the death of the highlife legend.
Nigerian writer and poet Dami Ajayi described the late legend as a “highlife maestro” and a “fantastic guitarist”.
Who is Ebo Taylor and What’s His Legacy?

Ebo was born in Cape Coast, Ghana, in 1936. He became active in the late 1950s with influential highlife bands Stargazers and Broadway Dance.

He later returned to Ghana, where he led both the Ghana Black Star Band and the Uhuru Dance Band, while also working closely with groups such as Apagya Show Band, CK Mann, and Pat Thomas throughout the 1970s.
His global breakthrough came in 2010 with Love and Death, his first internationally distributed album released on Strut Records. That was followed by Appia Kwa Bridge in 2012 and Yen Ara in 2018, alongside several other standout projects.
