Premier League Predictions: Are Manchester United About To Bounce Back?

Premier League Predictions: Man United Seek Revival as Man City Face Forest Test Premier League Predictions: Man United Seek Revival as Man City Face Forest Test

Welcome to another weekend of Premier League predictions. In this week’s episode, Manchester United fans have spent the week behaving like the club has just won the Champions League. A dramatic midweek comeback against Roma will do that to a fanbase that has been surviving on optimism, nostalgia and the occasional decent 20-minute spell.

The small problem? United’s league form remains a different story, and Aston Villa are coming to Old Trafford with every intention of ruining the party.

Matchweek 10 has plenty more mischief in store. Arsenal are top and continuing to make winning football look like a punishment for anyone who enjoys entertainment. Manchester City have lost their last two league matches, Liverpool are searching for consistency, and Chelsea face a Sunderland side that have sunk to a new low and could drag them down with.

The weekend runs from Friday, November 6, to Sunday, November 8, with five fixtures standing out. Can United finally turn their European comeback into a league revival? Will City stop the rot at Nottingham Forest? And is there any realistic chance Hull City will leave the Emirates with something to show for their afternoon?

Here are our Premier League predictions for Matchweek 10.

Arsenal vs Hull City

Saturday, November 7 | 16:00 WAT

Arsenal are beginning to look rather comfortable at the top of the table, which is unfortunate news for everyone hoping the Premier League title race will provide some entertainment before Christmas.

Mikel Arteta’s side arrive after a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield, a result that underlined their ability to grind out victories even when the football is not exactly sending anyone into a frenzy. They also beat Slavia Prague 2-1 in midweek, so confidence should be high.

Hull, meanwhile, are having a rather awkward time. Their 2-2 draw with Ipswich last weekend extended their winless league run, and they have not won since their second match of the season in August. That is not exactly the sort of form you want to take to the Emirates.

The Tigers can at least point to some encouraging results against bigger opponents. They beat Manchester United 2-0 earlier in the campaign and drew 2-2 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. So, no, Arsenal should not start celebrating before kick-off.

Still, the numbers are firmly against the visitors. Arsenal have won 18 of their last 19 Premier League matches against promoted sides and seven consecutive home league games. Hull will need a disciplined defensive performance and a clinical counter-attacking display to make this uncomfortable.

Arsenal have also shown that they can win without producing a footballing masterpiece. Expect plenty of possession, patient probing and the occasional corner routine that looks like it required a meeting with the engineering department.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Hull City.

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City

Saturday, November 7 | 18:30 WAT

Manchester City are suddenly looking rather human. Pep Guardiola’s side have lost their last two Premier League matches, first against Aston Villa and then at home to Brighton. The latter defeat was particularly frustrating, with City managing 21 shots but only six on target.

Erling Haaland’s scoring streak also ended against Brighton, which means opposition defenders can briefly stop having nightmares about the Norwegian turning every half-chance into a crime scene.

City still remain one of the strongest sides in the division, but they need a response. Another defeat would make this mini-crisis considerably louder, especially with Arsenal continuing to collect points.

Nottingham Forest, however, are not exactly the ideal opponents for a team trying to rebuild confidence. They may be sitting near the bottom of the table, but the underlying numbers suggest they have been rather unlucky.

The Premier League’s expected-points model places Forest third, despite their actual position being 19th. Their expected goals for stand at 14.3, compared with just four goals scored, while their expected goals against figure is the second-best in the division. In other words, they have been creating enough chances and defending well enough to deserve more than their miserable points tally.

Oliver Glasner’s side could make life difficult for City by sitting compact, frustrating their opponents and attacking quickly when possession changes hands. That approach has the potential to expose a City side whose confidence has taken a couple of knocks.

But Forest still need to start putting the ball in the net. Expected goals do not earn points, and nobody gets a Premier League bonus for looking unlucky.

City should have enough quality to take advantage if Forest fail to convert their opportunities. However, this could be far more uncomfortable than the league table suggests.

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 1-2 Manchester City.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool

Sunday, November 8 | 15:00 WAT

Liverpool are currently in that strange stage of the season where nobody quite knows what to make of them. They are not terrible enough to be written off, but they are hardly giving supporters reasons to start planning another title parade.

Arne Slot’s side suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Anfield last weekend, then followed it up with a 3-2 loss to Fenerbahce in the Champions League. Two defeats in quick succession are not ideal when you are supposed to be challenging for the biggest prizes.

Their visit to Selhurst Park could therefore arrive at an awkward time.

Crystal Palace have their own problems, having lost their last three league matches by an aggregate score of 9-0. They have slipped into the relegation zone and are conceding goals at a rate that would make even the most generous goalkeeper consider changing careers.

Pierre Sage needs a response, and Liverpool might offer an opportunity to get one. Palace have enjoyed some success against the Reds in recent seasons, winning or drawing several encounters, and their tactical approach could cause problems if they can stay organised.

However, there is a rather large issue: Palace have conceded 21 goals, the most in the division. That is not exactly encouraging preparation for a Liverpool attack that still possesses plenty of firepower.

Liverpool have also won only three of their last eight Premier League meetings with Palace, scoring nine goals across those matches. The historical record should give the hosts some encouragement, but the current defensive situation is a different matter.

Our Premier League predictions? If Liverpool play with any urgency, they should find opportunities. The question is whether they can defend properly for 90 minutes without giving their supporters another reason to complain online.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool.

Sunderland vs Chelsea

Sunday, November 8 | 15:00 WAT

Sunderland have had a difficult few weeks, and their 3-1 defeat to Coventry last weekend did little to improve the mood. They sit near the bottom of the table, but their performances have not always reflected their position.

Regis Le Bris’ team finished seventh last season, and the Premier League points out that their results in comparable fixtures are actually better than they were at the same stage of that campaign. The Black Cats also beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in May, a result that helped secure European football.

So, Chelsea should probably resist the temptation to arrive in Sunderland believing the three points are already in the bag.

Xabi Alonso’s side have won three of their last four Premier League matches, but they remain a work in progress. Their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham exposed some problems in midfield, where Spurs dominated the physical battle and recorded 16 recoveries to Chelsea’s three.

That is precisely where Sunderland could cause trouble. They are an energetic, physical side capable of making opponents uncomfortable, particularly when they win second balls and turn midfield battles into a proper scrap. And then there’s Brian Brobbey up front, who always looks like you need a tractor to get him off the ball.

Chelsea have enough technical quality to control the match, but they will need to match Sunderland’s intensity. If they allow the hosts to dictate the tempo, this could become another frustrating afternoon.

The Blues should still have enough attacking quality to edge it, although this is unlikely to be a comfortable stroll.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Chelsea.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa

Sunday, November 8 | 17:30 WAT

And now, the main event. Manchester United have finally won a football match, and the celebrations have been so enthusiastic that you would think Michael Carrick had just delivered the Premier League trophy.

United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League, an extraordinary comeback that Old Trafford enjoyed every bit of. But there is a small detail that should keep the celebrations under control: United are still winless in their last seven Premier League matches.

Their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend was another reminder that the problems have not disappeared simply because the team produced one memorable European night. The comeback against Roma was their first win in 10 games in all competitions, and it remains to be seen whether they can carry that energy into the league.

Aston Villa will not be particularly interested in United’s emotional recovery. Unai Emery’s side have been competitive this season and have already beaten Manchester City. They also defeated United 2-1 in the reverse fixture last December.

However, history at Old Trafford strongly favours the hosts. Villa have won only two of their 31 Premier League visits to Old Trafford, both by 1-0 scorelines. They have also won only four of the last 55 meetings between the clubs in all competitions.

United need to turn the Roma comeback into something more meaningful. The home side have the crowd, the historical advantage and a much-needed confidence boost. Villa have the quality to punish them, but this feels like an opportunity United cannot afford to waste.

Will the comeback spark a revival? Perhaps. Will United fans start talking about a top-four finish if they win? Absolutely. Some things never change.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Aston Villa.

Other Premier League predictions for Matchweek 10

The remaining fixtures also offer a few interesting battles, including a meeting between two teams desperate to improve their league positions and another opportunity for Tottenham to keep their revival going.

Here are our Premier League predictions for the rest:

Everton vs Coventry City

Friday, November 6 | 21:00 WAT

Coventry have started to find their feet after a difficult opening to the campaign. They have scored nine goals in their last five league matches, winning three of them, and Frank Lampard will hope that momentum continues.

Everton are seventh and have been more consistent, making this a difficult test for the visitors. Coventry’s recent improvement deserves credit, but their record against struggling teams will not necessarily translate into success against a more organised opponent.

Prediction: Everton 2-1 Coventry City.

Leeds United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Saturday, November 7 | 13:30 WAT

Leeds are in danger of losing the momentum they built over the past year. Daniel Farke’s side have gone five league matches without a win and have scored only twice since beating Newcastle 4-1 in September.

Unfortunately, Tottenham arrive in rather better shape. Spurs have won their last three Premier League games and kept clean sheets in their last two. Leeds need goals, but this is not an ideal opponent against which to rediscover their shooting boots.

Prediction: Leeds United 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur.

Fulham vs Newcastle United

Saturday, November 7 | 16:00 WAT

Newcastle have been entertaining, but their attacking approach has sometimes left them exposed at the back. They have allowed more fast breaks than any other side in the division, which could become a problem against Fulham.

Marco Silva’s opponents are comfortable keeping possession and building patiently, and that could force Newcastle to defend for longer spells. The visitors still have enough attacking quality to cause problems, but Fulham could make this a frustrating afternoon.

Prediction: Fulham 1-1 Newcastle United.

Brighton vs Brentford

Sunday, November 8 | 15:00 WAT

Brighton are among the league’s most in-form sides and have already beaten Manchester City this season. Fabian Hurzeler’s team continue to score freely, making them a difficult opponent for a Brentford defence that will need to be at its best.

Keith Andrews’ side have lost only one of their last 11 Premier League matches, but they have struggled to put consecutive victories together. Their win over Nottingham Forest last weekend was encouraging, although Brighton represent a much tougher attacking test.

Prediction: Brighton 2-1 Brentford.

Ipswich Town vs Bournemouth

Sunday, November 8 | 15:00 WAT

Bournemouth arrive in good form after putting together three consecutive Premier League victories without conceding. Marco Rose’s team have recovered from a difficult start and are beginning to look like genuine contenders for another European push.

Ipswich will not make this easy, particularly at home, but Bournemouth have been more convincing in recent weeks. They also have an opportunity to improve on their poor record against promoted sides from last season.

Prediction: Ipswich Town 1-2 Bournemouth.

Final whistle on Premier League predictions: Will Matchweek 10 deliver the drama?

Matchweek 10 has all the ingredients for another entertaining Premier League weekend. Manchester United have a chance to turn their comeback against Roma into a genuine revival, although Aston Villa will be more than happy to remind them that one good European night does not automatically fix a struggling league campaign.

Manchester City need to stop their unexpected losing streak, Liverpool must find some consistency, and Chelsea cannot afford to underestimate a Sunderland side with a habit of making life difficult for bigger clubs. Arsenal, meanwhile, will simply want to keep collecting points, even if their approach to football continues to test the patience of neutral supporters.

Our biggest question for this week’s Premier League predictions remains whether United can finally get their league campaign moving in the right direction. Their supporters have seen enough false dawns to know better than to celebrate too early, but another victory would certainly give them something to shout about.

As always, Premier League predictions rarely follow the script. Expect a few surprises, some questionable defending and at least one manager explaining after the match that his team deserved more. That’s the beauty of this league.
