Nigerian pastor Isaiah Wealth has ignited a heated debate on social media after he told his congregation about a vision in which God instructed him to collect “three bags of tithe” from church members.

The pastor shared the experience during a church service. He said he had been praying when the vision began. “I was standing in the spirit, I was praying, suddenly I saw myself in the throne of God. I laid down before him. Now I said, I’m yours to command. He now said, get me three bags of tithe,” he told the congregation.

Pastor Isaiah Wealth Says the Holy Spirit Urged Him to Speak

According to Pastor Wealth, he asked the Holy Spirit what the instruction meant as soon as he came out of the vision. He said the Holy Spirit told him that God wants his storehouse to be full and urged him not to fear the subject of tithing.

“I came out of vision, I said what’s that? The Holy Ghost said father said he wants his store house to be full, talk about tithe, don’t be afraid of it, you are my prophet, speak,” he said.

The pastor also told worshippers that God had directed him to speak about tithing rather than limit his ministry to prophecies about individual situations. He said God had spoken to him in strong terms.

“Don’t only prophesy on people’s situation, speak about this matter, and anybody that wants to get angry should get angry. Speak for me, I’m the God of the universe, speak about this matter,” he said.

Social Media Users Question the Claim

The pastor’s words quickly gained traction online, and many Nigerians shared their reactions. Several critics accused him of using God’s name to extract money from his followers. They argued that God would not give such an instruction.

Others focused on the pastor’s priorities. One user questioned the logic of a divine “first assignment” that centred on money. Critics said God could have asked him to intercede for the sick, the poor or struggling members of the church.

What Critics Said on X

User @heisturnx wrote one of the most widely shared responses. “So God took him to His throne, and the first assignment he gave him was to bring three bags full of tithe money? Not souls, not the sick, not the poor, not even prayers for struggling members. Three bags of tithe!” the user tweeted.

The user continued with a sharp rebuke. “Imagine how convenient it is that everytime a pastor wants money, God somehow gives him a fresh financial instruction. And the funniest part is that anyone who questions it is apparently fighting God.”

Another user, @mac_david16ayon, did not hold back either. “This people are really wicked … using the name of God to defraud people,” the user tweeted.

A Familiar Debate in Nigeria

The controversy joins a long-running conversation in Nigeria about money, faith and accountability in churches. Supporters of tithing argue that it sustains ministries and fulfils a biblical principle.

Critics, however, regularly challenge pastors who link divine revelations to financial demands. Pastor Wealth has not responded publicly to the criticism at the time of writing. His congregation’s reaction to the vision also remains unclear.
