A court has given Chris Brown an eight-month prison sentence, then suspended it for 12 months.
Bottle attack at Tape
Prosecutors say the US singer attacked Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, in February 2023. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) says Brown and his vocal coach walked up to Diaw, hit him on the head with a glass bottle and kicked him as he seated on the floor.
The pair “continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club”, the CPS said. It added that the victim was kicked while he was seated defenceless on the floor. Diaw ended up at St Mary’s Hospital with injuries to his head and knee.

Guilty plea
Brown pleaded guilty to affray, an offence that covers the use or threat of unlawful violence.
He admitted it rather than face a trial, so the court never had to decide his guilt at once. The plea settled the question of whether he committed the offence.
Chris Brown: What suspended sentence means
Brown does not go to prison now. The eight months hang over him for 12 months. If he keeps to the court’s conditions and commits no further offence, he never serves the sentence. If he breaks the conditions, the court can order him to serve it, depending on the circumstances. In practice, the sentence works as a warning rather than an immediate punishment.
Chris Brown is an American singer, songwriter and dancer. He has won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album, for F.A.M.E. and 11:11 (Deluxe), from 27 nominations. In 2024, he became the first 21st-century artist to chart on the Hot 100 for 20 consecutive years. He has won 219 awards overall.
