Applications for the 2026/2027 Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan are open, with the current window running from September 23 to December 31, 2026.
The National Association of Nigerian Students announced the dates on September 23. Lagos State University later confirmed the same window for its students and warned applicants about errors in their academic records.
Students should apply through the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal, not through links shared by agents or unknown social-media accounts. Students should note that NELFUND is a loan, not a grant.
This guide explains who can apply, what to prepare and how to submit a request for the 2026/2027 academic session.
NELFUND 2026/2027 application deadline
The reported application window opened on Wednesday, September 23, and closes on Thursday, December 31, 2026.
The official NELFUND portal is currently available for registration and login. Students should still check the portal and their institution’s official channels for any change to the deadline or verification process.
Applying early gives students time to correct errors. It also gives their institution time to verify records before the application window closes.
Who can apply for the NELFUND loan?
NELFUND’s published information describes the scheme as support for eligible Nigerian students in public tertiary institutions.
Its official FAQ says students in public Nigerian universities, polytechnics, Colleges of Education and vocational schools can apply. The loan is for both new students and existing ones. The applicants must, however, prove that they are Nigerian. Private university students can apply as long as their school is recognised.
Students should confirm their school’s participation through the institution and the official NELFUND portal before applying.
Documents and details to prepare
Intending students should gather their information before opening the application form. The exact documents requested may depend on the applicant’s institution and status. Prepare the following:
- NIN details that match the applicant’s official name and date of birth.
- JAMB registration details, especially for newly admitted students.
- Matriculation number for returning students, where applicable.
- Admission letter or proof of admission if the portal requests it.
- Student identification details and current course information.
- BVN and an active bank account for any approved upkeep payment.
- A working email address and phone number that the applicant can access.
- Current institutional records, including department, level and academic session.
A difference between a student’s name on the NIN, JAMB, BVN and school record can delay verification.
Students should also keep clear copies of any document the portal requests. They should save their application reference and status after submitting the form.

How to apply through the official portal
1. Open the NELFUND Student Loan Portal
Visit portal.nelf.gov.ng. The main NELFUND website also links to the application platform.
Check the website address before entering personal information. NELFUND will not need a student to share a portal password or one-time verification code with an agent.
2. Start the registration process
Select “Get Started” option. The portal asks applicants to confirm their Nigerian citizenship.
Applicants who select that they are not Nigerian cannot continue with the student-loan registration process.
3. Verify educational information
Follow the portal instructions to select or confirm the institution and enter the requested academic details.
Fresh students should keep their JAMB registration information available. Returning students should also have their matriculation information ready.
4. Verify student status
The registration page directs applicants to verify their student status through JAMB. Complete this step with the correct details from the applicant’s official records.
If the portal cannot find the student, do not create several accounts. Contact the school’s registry, ICT unit, student-affairs office or NELFUND desk first.
5. Create an account and complete the profile
Use an active email address and a secure password. Complete the personal, contact, academic and banking sections shown on the dashboard.
Check the spelling of the applicant’s name, date of birth, institution, department, course and bank details before continuing.
6. Select “Request for Student Loan”
After completing the profile, choose the student-loan request option on the dashboard.
The application may display separate fields for institutional charges and upkeep. Select only the support the student needs and review the amount shown before submitting.
7. Review the declaration and submit
Read the loan declaration and repayment terms carefully. Confirm that the information is accurate, then submit the application through the portal.
Take a screenshot or save the application reference. Continue checking the dashboard for verification requests, approval updates or corrections.
What does the loan cover?
NELFUND’s official portal describes the initiative as an interest-free loan programme.
The support can therefore include:
- Approved institutional charges.
- An upkeep allowance, where the applicant requests it and NELFUND approves it.
The amount is not necessarily the same for every student. It depends on the verified institutional charge and the upkeep amount shown on the applicant’s account.
NELFUND’s public 2026/2027 notice does not state one universal amount. Applicants should use the figure displayed on the official portal and keep a copy of the approval details.
The official terms say the loan amount will be the figure verified and logged in the institutional-fee and/or upkeep fields on the student’s account. Applying for both components does not guarantee approval of both.
What repayment involves
Students should read the repayment conditions before accepting the loan. NELFUND’s official terms page says repayment begins two years after a beneficiary completes the NYSC programme.
The same terms require a beneficiary to update employment details on the student-loan portal. They also provide for the direct deduction of 10 per cent of monthly salary for repayment.
A graduate who becomes self-employed must update the business information within 60 days, according to the terms. The information includes the business name, address, registration details, bankers and ownership details.
The loan remains the beneficiary’s responsibility. NELFUND’s terms say the beneficiary remains liable for loans paid to the institution or to the student for upkeep, whether or not the student eventually graduates.
Applicants also consent to the use of the Global Standing Instruction (GSI) if they fail to repay when the loan becomes due. NELFUND describes the GSI as a last-resort recovery process that can apply money held in the beneficiary’s accounts across financial institutions to the outstanding loan.
If a beneficiary is unemployed when repayment becomes due, the person should contact NELFUND by sworn affidavit every three months after two years post NYSC
Common mistakes that can delay a NELFUND application
Mismatched personal details: A name or date-of-birth difference between NIN, JAMB, BVN and school records can stop verification. Correct the official record before submitting the application where possible.
Missing institutional records: A student may qualify but still fail to proceed if the institution has not uploaded or corrected the relevant record. The applicant should contact the school’s registry or ICT office for help.
Incorrect JAMB information: LASU specifically advised applicants to verify their JAMB details and update institutional records before using the NELFUND portal. The university warned that data mismatches could cause delays or disqualification.
Waiting until the final day: Students should not wait until December 31 to start. Verification and correction can take time, especially when the applicant depends on a school office.
Using unofficial application linksUse portal.nelf.gov.ng and links published by NELFUND or the institution. Do not pay an agent to create an account or surrender a password, OTP, BVN or NIN slip to a stranger.
NELFUND: Does applying for guarantee payment?
No. The institution must verify the student’s records, and NELFUND must approve the application and amount. A submitted form is not proof of approval.
As of September 28, 2026, the reported deadline remains December 31. Students who plan to apply should start on the official portal, verify their records with their institution and read the repayment terms before accepting any loan.
