Innocent friends and family members have faced arrest and prison time after their friends or relatives abroad implicated them by sending illegal drugs through consignments without their knowledge.
A video shared on Facebook by Femi Babafemi shows how some Nigerians abroad send illegal drugs to Nigeria. They use their family members and friends as recipients without telling them that the goods contain illicit substances.
Illicit drugs hidden in consolidated cargoes
Babafemi, who serves as the director of media and advocacy for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), raised the alarm over the growing trend in a post accompanying the video. He wrote in the caption: 
“The new thing now is that some of our ‘abroad’ people are sending home consolidated cargoes contaminated with illicit drugs especially Colorado and Loud, putting their family members and friends as consignees or recipients.”
He also warned Nigerians against accepting consignments from people abroad when they do not know the full contents of the packages.

NDLEA warns Nigerians against accepting unknown packages
Babafemi wrote:
“The warning here is, if you’re not part of the syndicate, don’t accept to receive consignments on behalf of your ‘abroad’ brother or sister or friend particularly if you don’t know the full content of the consignment.”
He added:
“Many are already behind bars for this and the number keeps increasing with daily operations by NDLEA NIGERIA officers. Please heed this warning and save yourself of the jail experience.”
The warning highlights the danger Nigerians face when they accept packages on behalf of friends or relatives abroad. Especially without knowing what the consignments contain. Such packages could expose unsuspecting recipients to arrest and prosecution for drug-related offences.
