Gospel artiste Neon Adejo has spoken about the chat between him and Alicia, which surfaced online after Alicia accused her husband, a wedding photographer, David Martins, of physically, emotionally and financially abusing her.

Alicia also accused David of abandoning her and their son. She said the alleged abuse had continued for three years and called him out on Instagram last week.

The chat between Alicia and Neon later surfaced online, with the gospel artiste facing accusations that he was flirting with David’s wife.

Neon has now explained what happened and why he asked Alicia to send him a selfie.

He said he had already spoken to his pastor, the men he is accountable to and, most importantly, his wife before deciding to address the issue publicly.

Neon Adejo explains how it all began with Alicia

According to him, everything started earlier this year when he came to Nigeria for a conference. He said after the meeting, people came to greet him as usual and Alicia also approached him.

Neon said: “The first thing she said was, ‘Hey Neon, you haven’t seen my son this year.’ And I said, ‘How is your son?’ She said he is fine and he is with the nanny.

“And the next thing I said was, ‘How about your husband? I haven’t seen him too. How is he?’ And she said he is probably busy, that’s why he couldn’t make it. So I said that’s fine.”

Neon said he was about to leave when Alicia told him that there was something she wanted to share with him. He said he looked at her and noticed that she was teary, which made him realise that the matter was important.

They walked towards his car, where he asked her what she wanted to discuss. Neon said Alicia then told him that she had suffered mental, financial, verbal and emotional abuse from her husband for the past three years.

He said he had known Alicia’s husband, David, for some time, so what she told him came as a shock because it did not match what he had seen about their relationship on social media.

According to Neon, Alicia opened her phone and showed him pictures of her injuries. He said the pictures were so disturbing that he could not compare them with the pictures Alicia had previously shared publicly.

Neon said the pictures left him emotional because he could not make sense of what he was seeing. He asked Alicia how she had been surviving, and she told him that she had been staying with a neighbour in the compound.

She also told him that things had not been easy because she was nursing her son. Neon said he then asked her what he could do to help.

He said Alicia told him that her child needed some things, so he immediately sent her money to get what the child needed. He also told her that she could use whatever remained to take care of herself.

Neon said he assured her that she was not alone and that he would support her through the situation. He also told Alicia that he would contact David.

Neon says David unfollowed him

The gospel artist said he reached out to David and told him what his wife had shared with him.

According to him, David replied: “Nobody cares and that’s why I’ve come to realise. I’m not sure exactly why you want to talk to me. I’ve been pre-judged, misjudged and misunderstood. You’re supposed to be my brother.”

Neon said David unfollowed him on Instagram after the exchange. He then spoke with his wife about what had happened, and they agreed to support Alicia as much as they could, including praying for her.

Neon says he helped Alicia get an apartment

Neon said Alicia contacted him again when the place where she was staying gave her a deadline to leave. He said she told him that she did not have anywhere to go.

Neon said he informed his wife about the new situation and they prayed about it. Afterwards, he said he felt compelled to help Alicia find a place to stay. He eventually found an Airbnb suitable for Alicia and her nanny.

Neon said he also paid the nanny for one month to look after Alicia’s son while Alicia attended her gender-based violence appointments connected to the case.

What happened with Alicia’s hair

A few weeks after Alicia moved into the apartment, Neon said she contacted him because she wanted to attend church.

According to him, she told him that she needed to do her nails and hair but did not have enough money. Neon said he told her not to worry and explained that he had a friend who owned a braiding company.

He contacted his friend, explained what was happening and asked about the cost of doing Alicia’s hair. His friend decided to reduce the price and they booked an appointment.

Neon said a member of the company came the next day and spent about eight hours doing Alicia’s hair. However, Alicia said she did not like the hair because the stylist had not used what she wanted.

Neon said he contacted his friend again and explained what had happened. According to him, his friend told him that what Alicia wanted would cost much more but said she had already tried to keep the cost low because she was helping him.

Neon said he told his friend to do whatever she could for Alicia, and she agreed. They eventually completed the hair, and that was the end of the matter.

Why Neon asked Alicia for a selfie

Neon said the following day, Alicia sent him a message saying she was getting ready to go out.

According to him, she also said: “Let me know how your day goes, and I don’t want your wife to be like, why is she sending a selfie when I was sending my hair.”

Neon said he was surprised because he had not asked Alicia for a selfie. He said:

“I was shocked. There is nothing I have done that would make me be scared of showing my messages to my wife. So why are you mentioning my wife?”

Neon said he then told Alicia that his wife would not have an issue with the chat and asked her to send the selfie. He explained that he only wanted the picture so he could send it to the friend who had helped with Alicia’s hair and thank her for the work.

He said this was the message David later posted on his story, which created the impression that he was flirting with Alicia.

Neon accused David of removing important parts of the chat to create a different narrative. He said the timestamp on the messages would also show what happened.

According to Neon, when he spoke with Alicia during a three-way call, she confirmed that there was no flirting between them. He said Alicia told them that Neon did not flirt with her and that he only helped her pay for her hair.

Neon said he would never take advantage of Alicia’s situation.

“I would never want to take advantage of any situation. God forbid a bad thing,” he said.

He added that he had discussed the matter with his wife and they had prayed about it.

Neon said he and his wife had also created stricter boundaries to make sure that a similar situation did not happen again and that their intentions would not become misunderstood.
