Following the death of veteran actor Taiwo ‘Ogogo’ Hassan, heartfelt condolences have flooded Nigerian social media. Many actors and celebrities, as well as the Lagos and Ogun State Governments, have expressed deep sadness at the loss.
Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture
The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in a statement, described Ogogo as an icon who promoted the heritage of the Yoruba culture. The statement, which was issued on Sunday by the Commissioner, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, further added that:
“His contributions to the creative sector helped shape the cultural landscape of Lagos State and Nigeria, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Prince Dapo Abiodun
Prince Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun State, where Hassan hails from, also expressed the development as an “irreplaceable loss” via an Instagram post. He wrote on behalf of his family and the ogun state government:
“His death is a painful and irreplaceable loss to his family, the people of Ilaro and Yewaland, Ogun State, and the entire Nigerian entertainment industry.”
“On behalf of our family, Government and the good people of Ogun State, we commiserate with his family, the people of Ilaro and the entertainment industry,” he added.
Atiku Abubakar
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar expressed the news as being “deeply saddening.” He said:
“Alhaji Taiwo Hassan was more than a gifted actor. Through a remarkable career, he brought laughter into countless homes, told stories that reflected our society and used his talent not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire social rebirth.”
Femi Adebayo
In an emotional video, Femi Adebayo, amidst tears, said: “Uncle Taiwo was a really great man; he fought.”
Femi Adebayo came to the limelight in the film Owo Blow, which he acted in alongside Ogogo. Femi played the younger version of Ogogo in the film. They both played the role of Wole Owolabi together. The 1996 role as Wole Owolabi gave him his big break in the Nollywood industry and a major part of his rise to stardom.

Funke Akindele
Funke Akindele, whose birthday is on August 24, took to her Instagram Stories:
“Rest in peace, Sir T! Your impact in the industry will never be forgotten. Thank you for the legacy you leave behind.”
Akindele is a product of Odunfa Caucus co-chaired by Yinka Quadri and Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. Though she had featured in I Need to Know, Odunfa groomed her to be one of the biggest Nollywood actress she is today.
She followed up hours later with birthday wishes to herself, which has caused an uproar, with some fans suggesting she should have stalled her birthday celebration in honour of Ogogo.
Burna Boy
The African Giant, Burna Boy, also took to his Instagram Stories to express his sadness at the loss of the actor, calling him a father figure whom he watched in movies during his childhood. He wrote:
“RIP to our father, Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, aka Ogogo. This is a very painful loss. You’ve always been like a father to me. I grew up watching your movies. Hearing this news really broke me. I still find it hard to believe. Rest in peace, legend.”
Wasiu Ayinde KWAM 1
The legendary Nigerian Fuji Musician Wasiu Ayinde, aka KWAM 1, broke down in tears on stage during his live performance at the Mushin 30th Anniversary Celebration. He expressed his sadness as he took some time to sing and pray for the repose of the late actor on hearing the news of Ogogo’s death.
Senator Solomon Adeola Yayi
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola ‘Yayi’, the senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District and the APC Gubernatorial Candidate of Ogun State, expressed his heartfelt condolences in an official statement.
Yayi and Ogogo hail from the same Ilaro – Yewa axis of Ogun State. Ogogo was in the frontrunner of celebrities clamouring and campaigning for Yayi to be the next Ogun State governor.
During his ailment, Yayi reportedly flew in a medical doctor from India to treat Ogogo. Mourning the actor’s demise, the politician wrote:
“Alhaji Taiwo Hassan was more than an accomplished veteran of the entertainment industry to us; he was a dear brother and a proud son of Ilaro in Ogun State, whose remarkable career brought joy to generations and contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry. His talent, humility and enduring body of work will ensure that his memory lives on.”
Seyi Law
Seyi Law, Nigerian stand-up comedian and Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment and Tourism to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, wrote in a X post:
“You were an essential part of my childhood. I remember going to fetch water and running to Odunfa Street to catch a glimpse of you and Uncle Yinka Quadri at the Odunfa Caucus building…Your catchphrase, “mo fi titobi Olorun Oba bura,” combined with your calm demeanour, is iconic. Your aura belongs to a true SUPERSTAR.”
Taiwo Hassan Ogogo passed away on August 23, 2026, after a long battle with stage four cancer. Friends of the late actor, including Yinka Quadri, Jide Kosoko and Toyosi Adesanya, arrived in Ilaro, Ogun State for his burial.
