Prince Harry and Meghan Set to Return to UK With Children After 6 Years

See why they traded royal life in Britain for California.

Prince Harry and Meghan are planning to move back to Britain from California with their children later in August.

The Prince Harry and Meghan’s return to UK plans will mark a major change for their children. Their move will be the first time Prince Archie (7) and Princess Lilibet (5), will attend school in Prince Harry’s homeland.

The family will establish a private, non-royal residence while keeping their homes in Montecito, California, and Portugal. For security reasons, the specific location of the new house and the children’s school is unknown, BBC reports.

Prince Archie used to attend school near the family’s Montecito home. He and his sister will now go to school in Britain in Year 3 and Year 1 respectively.

According to the BBC, their decision comes shortly after a summer visit to the UK during which the children reunited with their grandfather, King Charles, for the first time in more than four years.

Whether Harry or Meghan will resume official working roles within the royal family remains unknown.

Prince Harry and Princess Meghan originally stepped away from full-time royal life in 2020. On January 8 of that year, the couple announced via Instagram that they intended to “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family.”

Their reason was to become financially independent and to split their time between the UK and North America while they continue to support the Queen.

Their announcement, which became widely known as “Megxit,” caught the royal house by surprise.

They reached an agreement later that month, after a family meeting at Sandringham. The agreement was that they would no longer be working members of the royal family. They would not use the titles His/ Her Royal Highness, though they retain the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

They first moved to Canada and then to California later in 2020. Archie was born in the UK in 2019. He spent his earliest months at Frogmore, while Lilibet was born in California in 2021.

The couple was later asked to vacate Frogmore permanently. The reasons were centred on wanting greater financial independence, reduced media intrusion, and the freedom to build a more private family life.

The couple also cited intense and often hostile tabloid coverage, particularly directed at Meghan, as a major factor. They also mentioned their frustration over institutional constraints that restricted their ability to build independent projects and brands.

They described feeling insufficiently supported by the royal household on issues such as media pushback and personal well-being.

Since then, the couple has built their lives in California, focused on media deals, philanthropy through the Archewell Foundation, and Meghan’s lifestyle ventures, while maintaining a strained affinity with the wider royal family.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s return to UK marks the family’s biggest change in living arrangements since they decided to move from senior royal duties in 2020.
