Emotional affairs rarely go public, but when they do, the fallout is always messy.

That’s what happened when an anonymous married man called into Confessions Thursday on Nigeria Info 99.3. Speaking to hosts Joyce Onyemuwa and Kemi on The Sunny Side, he admitted to an uncontrollable emotional affair with another married woman and that he had no idea how to end it.

How It Began

The caller explained that he and a close female friend who was also married, had gradually drifted from casual friendship into something neither of them had planned for or knew how to stop. This wasn’t about a sudden physical encounter; it was slower and, in many ways, more dangerous. Their connection deepened over time through conversation, shared vulnerability, and emotional closeness that eventually took on a life of its own.

What He Said

When Joyce and Kemi asked why he hadn’t been honest with his wife or stepped back before reaching this point, the caller didn’t offer excuses; he offered honesty.

“I can’t tell my wife,” he said. “The discussion has gotten to a level where neither of us can control it.”

This statement reveals not a man unaware of his actions, but one who knows exactly what he is doing and feels genuinely trapped. His communication with his friend had moved beyond ordinary friendship, creating a private world increasingly incompatible with his marriage.

The hosts asked a natural follow-up: if both are married and recognise the danger, why not simply pull back?

“I’m feeling it that if I ask her to stop or myself to stop, one person will feel bad,” he said.

And there it is. The emotional deadlock that keeps these situations alive long after both involved can see where they are heading. The fear of causing pain, and feeling that pain himself, had become more powerful than his responsibility to his marriage.

When asked whether the relationship can ever return to what it was, the caller was clear:

“At the level we are now, it’s very difficult for us to say no to breaking the relationship.”

Why This Kind of Affair Is So Hard to Escape

The caller’s situation isn’t unusual, even if it’s not often spoken about openly. Emotional affairs follow a pattern; they don’t arrive suddenly but build gradually: a secret here, a late-night conversation there, moments of vulnerability met with genuine understanding. Each step seems small and harmless, but by the time both realize what they’ve built, dismantling it feels like losing something real.

This is what makes emotional affairs so complex and difficult to leave. Physical affairs can sometimes be compartmentalised, but emotional ones colonise the inner self; the part usually reserved for one’s partner. When someone else occupies that space, the marriage can feel like an obstacle, and the affair may seem like the truth.

The caller did not describe this as something that happened to him. Instead, he portrayed it as something he was inside of; unable to see his way out and unwilling, not just unable, to end it.

The Question Nobody Is Answering

What the caller didn’t directly address, and what the hosts didn’t press him on, is the other person involved: his wife. While he spoke of not wanting to hurt his friend and of not wanting to lose that connection, the person most likely to be harmed without even knowing (his wife) was absent from the conversation. That absence itself speaks volumes.
