A Zimbabwean developer, Courage Nyoni, has gained international attention after creating the Lobola Calculator, an app that estimates bride price and introduces users to a longstanding African cultural practice.
Lobola is a traditional marriage custom in many Southern African communities. During the process, families negotiate a bride price as part of marriage arrangements.
Many other African communities also practise similar traditions. Family values, community expectations, and cultural customs often shape these discussions, making the process difficult for outsiders to understand. 
Nyoni created the Lobola Calculator to make the concept easier for people to explore. Rather than building a simple tool that generates random figures, he worked closely with community elders to understand the factors that often influence lobola negotiations. He then used their insights to help shape the app’s algorithm.

The app asks users a series of questions before generating an estimated lobola amount for the bride price. Its growing international popularity eventually caught the attention of Japanese television, which featured the app and introduced it to a wider audience. The appearance highlighted the global interest in African traditions and the creative ways technology can make cultural practices more accessible.
