Equatorial Guinea’s government has resigned after an official performance review found that ministries and public institutions achieved only about 10% of the goals assigned to them. The decision followed an assessment led by the government, which concluded that most ministries had failed to deliver on key objectives.

The announcement has attracted attention across Africa because mass cabinet resignations are rare. While governments frequently reshuffle ministers or remove individual officials, it is unusual for an entire government to step down following a performance review.

According to reports, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue disclosed that the review showed ministries had completed only a small fraction of their assigned targets. The findings prompted President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo to accept the government’s resignation and begin the process of forming a new cabinet.

The performance review formed part of a broader effort to measure how effectively ministries were carrying out their responsibilities. Officials reportedly assessed projects, policy implementation, and institutional targets across different sectors.

Authorities said ministries achieved only about 10% of their objectives, leaving roughly 90% unfinished or unmet. The decision has sparked debate online, with many people describing it as one of the strongest examples of government accountability seen in Africa in recent years. Others have questioned whether the resignations alone will address the deeper issues that led to the poor performance.

Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa’s major oil-producing countries, but it has long faced criticism over governance, transparency, and the management of public resources. Despite its energy wealth, many citizens continue to face economic challenges.

The resignations come at a time when governments across Africa face growing pressure to improve service delivery, create jobs, strengthen infrastructure, and show measurable results.
