For the third time this year, a mysterious and pungent smell has thrown residents of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, into a state of panic after spreading through the campus of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School.
The latest emission, which occurred during school hours on Wednesday left at least 30 people, both students and faculty members, requiring immediate medical treatment.
The toxic odour caused widespread breathlessness and severe discomfort across the premises, sparking chaotic scenes as terrified parents rushed to the school to pick up their children.
Eyewitness accounts said that emergency teams had to quickly evacuate the affected victims to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital for urgent care.
This recent crisis in the area happened just months prior.
In April, approximately 30 students from that same school in Ijebu-Ode were hospitalised due to exposure to an unidentified substance. In May, over 100 students from various schools, including Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, were similarly affected by the unidentified smell.
Vice Principal Adeola Borogun clarified that a strange odour, not a gas explosion, caused students at the school to vomit and faint, leading to a call for ambulances.
“Several students began vomiting and fainting, forcing the school management to call for ambulances from the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode,” she said.
State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed this, suggesting a gas leakage may be the source, potentially from the school laboratory or nearby community. Oresanya stated that an investigation with a gas analyser to determine the exact cause.
