By making this move,Flutterwave follows other payment platforms like Paystack in becoming a microfinance bank. The news also comes after their recent acquisition ofMono.

Why Are Fintechs Becoming Banks?

In the past, payment companies relied on a “sponsorship” model. They had to partner with traditional banks to access national financial systems. While this worked, it often slowed down new ideas and forced fintechs to share their revenue with the banks. With this new licence, Flutterwave has more power over its own operations, can manage its own deposits, and can move money much faster across its platform.

By working directly within the regulated financial system, Flutterwave wants to make transactions smoother and payouts faster for the millions of merchants and shoppers using its network in Nigeria, a country where trillions of naira move through digital apps every year.

CEO Olugbenga Agboola noted that this “milestone allows us to make our infrastructure more efficient and deliver faster, more efficient financial services”

The license marks a new chapter for Flutterwave, opening the door for a better banking setup that covers various needs. This includes simpler account management for users, better business tools like payroll and multi-currency accounts, and easier ways for developers to build financial features into their own apps.

Overall, the banking licence gives Flutterwave the independence it needs to keep building new products in Africa’s fast-moving tech world.
