The 2026 Met Gala delivered moments, Beyoncé co-chairing, Sabrina Carpenter on the steps, the naked dress trend refusing to die. But for every headline made on those stairs, there was a headline made by someone who simply was not there.
Some absences were logistical. Some were political. Some were just deeply predictable. Here is the full breakdown.
1. Zendaya

She is arguably the most anticipated presence at any Met Gala she attends. This year, she did not attend. After making headlines with her recent romantic film ‘The Drama’ opposite Robert Pattinson, Zendaya skipped the 2026 Met Gala due to prior commitments. Last year she wore a custom white three-piece Louis Vuitton suit designed by Pharrell Williams that shut the internet down entirely. The steps felt her absence.
2. Timothée Chalamet

This one will make you laugh. Chalamet’s absence sparked widespread discussion online. The ‘Marty Supreme’ actor reportedly skipped the 2026 event to attend a crucial New York Knicks playoff game. Fans had been anticipating a red carpet debut alongside Kylie Jenner. They got neither. He chose the Knicks. Respectfully, very on brand.
3. Bella Hadid

This is the absence with the most weight behind it. Bella Hadid, who has attended the event five times before, stayed home in protest of Jeff Bezos sponsoring the Met Gala and serving as honorary chair. While she made no public statement, Hadid liked an Instagram post captioned: “I love the ICE out pins but you can’t wear them to the @jeffbezos backed Met Gala.”
4. Meryl Streep

The irony of Meryl Streep’s absence might be the sharpest detail of the entire night.
Despite her current starring role in The Devil Wears Prada 2, a film built around a character directly inspired by Met Gala mastermind Anna Wintour, Streep declined her invitation. While her representatives formally stated that the gala “has never quite been her scene,” multiple reports indicate she skipped in protest of billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos serving as co-chairs.
Her Devil Wears Prada 2 co-stars Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci all attended. Streep alone stayed home. For a woman playing a character modelled on the woman who runs the event, showing up would have been the cultural moment of the evening.
5. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has not attended a Met Gala since 2016, when she co-chaired the ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’ edition. Between her globally dominant tours and album releases, Swift has largely opted out of high-fashion red carpets in recent years. Her name was not on the tip sheet. No surprise. No explanation needed at this point. She simply does not go anymore.
6. Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is preparing for her upcoming Eternal Sunshine Tour, which kicks off in Oakland, California, on June 6. With a tour of that scale in the pipeline, the Met Gala becomes a scheduling casualty rather than a deliberate skip. Still, her absence was felt, she has delivered some of fashion’s most theatrical Gala moments and the ‘Costume Art’ theme this year felt tailor-made for her.
7. Kanye West

Kanye West was absent, mostly because of his ongoing controversies. His last Met Gala appearance was in 2019 with Kim Kardashian during the Camp edition. Given everything that has happened in the years since, his absence requires very little explanation. The more interesting story is that Kim attended without him, and made headlines doing it.
8. Olivia Rodrigo

This one is the most understandable skip of the bunch. Fresh off hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live, releasing a new single, performing at Coachella, and announcing a brand new album, Rodrigo did not appear on the 2026 red carpet. She had arguably done more in the two weeks before the Gala than most people do in a year. The steps will still be there next May.

The Bigger Picture
The 2026 Met Gala had a protest dimension that previous years did not. With Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams co-chairing and a wave of protests dominating headlines, the conversation around who shows up, and who pointedly does not, has never been louder.
A single seat at the 2026 Met Gala cost $100,000, with full tables going for $350,000, a $25,000 hike from the year before. At that price point, an absence starts to feel less like a scheduling conflict and more like a statement.
Some of the names on this list stayed home because they were busy. Others stayed home because they were making a point. And a few, perhaps, just did not want to spend a hundred thousand dollars to eat ‘bad’ food and stand alone at a party where nobody talks to anyone they do not already know.
The steps were still beautiful. But the gaps told their own story.
