Brighton & Hove Albion’s reputation for identifying emerging talent has led the Premier League club to another highly rated prospect. This time, the Seagulls have signed 18-year-old Nigerian winger, Zadok Yohanna, from Swedish side AIK.
Still largely unknown outside Scandinavian football circles, Yohanna has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past 12 months. Here are 10 things to know about Brighton’s latest signing.
Indigene of Bauchi State
Born on 29 June 2007 in Bauchi State, Yohanna presents a familiar Nigerian football narrative marked by raw talent, sacrifice and a relentless pursuit of opportunity.
Leaving Bauchi For Kaduna
One of the more striking aspects of Yohanna’s journey is the age at which he left his family. Around the age of 12 or 13, according to Wikipedia, he relocated to Kaduna to join the Ikon Allah Football Academy, beginning a path that would eventually take him to Europe.

Move To AIK in 2025
AIK signed Yohanna in June 2025 after identifying his potential in Nigeria. He initially joined the club’s youth ranks and wasted little time making an impression.
His early performances for the under-19 side included four goals in three matches, accelerating his promotion into the first team set-up.
Rapid Rise In Sweden
Yohanna made his first senior appearance for AIK in August 2025. By the following season, he had become a regular starter on the right wing. For a teenager arriving from Nigeria less than a year earlier, the speed of his progression was remarkable.
Arriving in the Big Time
The winger’s breakthrough campaign came in 2026. He scored twice against BK Hacken in the Swedish Cup before registering his first league goal against Halmstads BK.
That strike showcased the qualities that excited scouts across Europe. It showed his pace, close control and the confidence to take on defenders.
Super Eagles Call-Up Before Turning 19
Yohanna’s emergence did not go unnoticed in Nigeria. In May 2026, he received his first invitation to the Super Eagles squad for the Unity Cup tournament in London, a significant milestone for a player with fewer than a dozen senior league appearances.
However, he was unable to join the national team. AIK announced that the winger would remain in Sweden as he was completing the final stages of rehabilitation from a hamstring injury. The decision delayed what was expected to be the first of many international call-ups.

Tracked By Europe’s Elites
As his performances attracted attention, reports linked Yohanna with some of Europe’s most prominent clubs. Among those said to be monitoring his development were Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen, all clubs with strong reputations for developing young players.
Style of Play
Although naturally left-footed, Yohanna primarily plays on the right flank, allowing him to cut inside and attack defenders. Former AIK scouting chief, Fredrik Wisur Hansen, praised his acceleration, one-on-one ability, close control and cultured left foot.
More Than Just a Right Winger
While Yohanna is most effective on the right flank, he is not limited to a single position. He can also operate as an attacking midfielder, giving coaches greater tactical flexibility.
Combined with his pace, close control and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, that versatility is important in the modern game, which values adaptable players.
Brighton Believe He Has a High Ceiling
The move is consistent with Brighton’s long-term recruitment strategy of acquiring young players before they reach their peak value. At 18, Yohanna remains a developing talent rather than a finished article, but the club clearly believes his potential is considerable. He follows the pathway of Ivorien Simon Adingra and Carlos Baleba of Cameroun, who were recruited before becoming household names.
The Bigger Picture
Yohanna has made only a handful of senior appearances, yet his rise has been swift enough to earn a move to one of the Premier League’s top talent-development clubs. His first Super Eagles call-up has already arrived and a lot of attention will be on him.
Will he become Brighton’s next success story? Time will tell.
