After some serious hype, I took it upon myself to watch Bimbo Ademoye’s new movie starring Bimbo Ademoye, Osas Ighodaro, Uzor Arukwe, Chioma Nwosu, and more. I’ll be sharing my thoughts soon.

Online, certain people—notably influencers—have been discussing how it was more than “just another YouTube movie”.

They’ve indicated that the budget was higher than others of its kind and that YouTube movies are usually low-budget. So, here’s what I thought:

How Was ‘Where Love Lives’ Story?

If you love simple, predictable, interesting, uncomplicated rom-coms, and you aren’t looking for a Christopher Nolan-type movie, then you will enjoy Bimbo Ademoye’s latest release.

It’s about a young couple who move into a classist estate that tests the strength of their love. That’s basically it. The plot gets interesting because three women (Osas Ighodaro, Chioma Nwosu and Emem Udonquak) in the neighbourhood form a clique to antagonise Bimbo—who then decides to run for president of the estate to show them. Also, a young neighbour, Greg (Bryan Okoye), attempts to date Demilade (Bimbo).

There are many funny one-liners, but not all of them land. For example, when the three ladies meet Bimbo for the first time, they engage in a “Mean Girls” back-and-forth which feels unnatural and forced, yet somehow still interesting.

Ekene (Uzor Arukwe) referring to Birkin bags as “Backin” was not funny. However, the times Bimbo bursts into random Yoruba were hilarious.

The plot twists were easy to spot. Ekene set up a test for Demilade’s loyalty by pretending to have lost all his wealth, and it was obvious that he wasn’t really broke. Only two of his containers got “burnt” at sea, and suddenly they are broke and have to sell off all their properties? He had no previous stock or investments? He can’t take a loan. Plus, Bimbo didn’t even have up to ₦150,000 in her account. Come on.

Osas played the role of Imade, and I couldn’t help but wonder how much she was paid for this movie. Her role mostly involved giving money to a man to prevent him from blackmailing her. No shocker, it was Greg.

The Luxury Was Luxurying

Did Bimbo Ademoye have brand deals with Matopedia Atelier? The truth is, the fashion game in this movie was off the charts. At some point, I started to wonder if they were part of the movie’s sponsors.

From WANNIFUGA to Ziva Lagos to Nivio Official to Get Glow, a lot of Nigerian fashion brands were spotlighted. Bimbo’s character also had an impressive collection of designer shoes and bags.

Now, there were also plenty of luxury cars, even a Tesla and a Rolls Royce, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough to make it look like anything other than a YouTube movie.

Uzor Arukwe Has Been Typecast

Is Uzor not tired of playing the same uneducated “Odogwu” role over and over again? We are tired; it is becoming cringeworthy. Igbo men are not all uneducated, and many speak excellent English; see Obi Cubana. He just can’t keep playing the same role repeatedly.

Is ‘Where Love Lives’ Better Than Other YouTube Movies?

No, it wasn’t better than other YouTube movies, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Like most YouTube movies, the majority of the film was shot in a sitting room or bedroom, and that’s okay. Also, the harsh makeup with crazy layers of foundation and textures in Nigeria’s hot weather needs to go.

Final Verdict

It was a feel-good movie, which is exactly what YouTube Nollywood movies are meant to be. If you think too much about it, the story and acting begins to unravel. Nobody goes to YouTube for exceptional cinematography, Oscar worthy performance, brilliant storytelling or excellent sets and locations.
