The Adeleke family is one which many people wish they were born into. A powerhouse billion-dollar family that has produced politicians, people in healthcare, as well as Afrobeats superstars. You might be wondering where their wealth came from, how they became successful and popular.

Well, at the root of it all is none other than Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke, popular Nigerian singer Davido’s grandfather. He set the stage for this Nigerian powerhouse family.

Born on December 27, 1923, in Ede, Osun State, Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke came from impressive stock. His mother, Madam Adeboyin of the Oni Ilegogoro compound, was a force to be reckoned with. She was one of Ede’s most outstanding Iyalodes (traditional heads of market women).

Young Raji didn’t just follow in big footsteps; he carved his own path. In 1947, he earned his registered nursing certificate from the Medical Department Nursing School, becoming one of Nigeria’s early pioneers in the field. By 1948, he was already part of the country’s first union for nurses.

But he didn’t stop at healthcare. Chief Adeleke went into labor activism with passion, serving as vice-president and director of the United Labour Congress of Nigeria and on the Federal Labour Advisory Council. He was even the chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross in Ede.

During Nigeria’s Second Republic, he was elected senator, representing the Osun Senatorial District. In 1976, the community honored him with the prestigious title of Balogun of Ede. He passed on a legacy of service, leadership, and community impact that still echoes today.

His Family

Family was everything to him. Raji Adeleke married two wives, his second wife, Mrs. Nnena Esther Adeleke from Enugu state, brought an Igbo Christian touch to the Yoruba Muslim household. Together, they raised five children who would go on to build empires in business and politics.

Their children grew up bridging cultures, born and raised partly in Enugu but always tied to their paternal roots.

Fast-forward to the next generation, Chief Raji’s sons turned the Adeleke name into a household one across Nigeria.

He is the eldest son who made history as Osun State’s first civilian governor in 1992 and later served as a senator. He carried forward his father’s political fire until his passing, cementing the family’s reputation in governance.

Next up is Adedeji and father of popular Nigerian singer Davido. He was born March 6, 1957 in Enugu state. A finance whiz with a BSc from Western Kentucky University (class of ’79), Adedeji became a business magnate and philanthropist. He’s the CEO of Pacific Holdings Limited and the visionary president of Adeleke University in Ede.

Married to the late Dr Vero Adeleke, who sadly passed on March 6, 2003. He raised stars like David Adedeji Adeleke, also known as Davido, his sisters Sharon, and Ashley Adeleke, and his brother, Adewale Adeleke.

The third of the brothers is Ademola Adeleke. He was born on May 13, 1960, in Enugu State, Nigeria, as well. Like his siblings, he blended business with public service. A commitment that made him serve as the senator for Osun West from 2017 to 2019 before he went on to become the governor of Osun State.

The Adeleke Success

The Adeleke family isn’t just about titles and wealth, though. It’s a modern dynasty with ancestral roots in Ede, generational wealth, and a commitment to giving back.

The family has poured resources into education, healthcare, politics, and community projects across Osun State. Davido himself has often made it clear how politics and business run in the family blood. His songs might dominate the charts, but the family’s story is one of cross-cultural love and unstoppable ambition.

From Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke’s humble beginnings as a nurse in the 1940s to Davido filling stadiums worldwide, this family proves that long-lasting legacy is built with a determination for a better future.
