Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze suffered a painful loss on Thursday, 29 January, following the death of his mother, Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, after a brief illness.

The news broke in the early hours of the day through social media posts by his siblings, Princess and David Chukwueze, who paid emotional tributes to their mother, describing her as the backbone of the family.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the loss later that morning. Its General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, described Mrs Chukwueze as a strong and constant presence in the lives of her children.

He noted that Samuel Chukwueze often spoke publicly about his mother’s role in his development, both as a person and as a professional footballer.

According to the NFF, her death came at a particularly painful time, as the national team had only just finished mourning another tragedy within the squad.

2. Wilfred Ndidi

Just two days before the Chukwueze family’s loss, Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi lost his father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal road accident.

The incident occurred in Umunede, Delta State, barely a week after Ndidi captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations. The NFF confirmed that Sunday Ndidi died on Tuesday morning following the crash.

In a personal social media post, the 29-year-old midfielder reflected on his final conversation with his father.

He wrote about the excitement in his father’s voice, only to realise later that it was a goodbye.

Ndidi also recalled celebrating his first-ever Super Eagles goal with the Papilo dance, a tribute he dedicated to his father during Nigeria’s 3–2 victory over Tunisia at AFCON.

The Nigeria Football Federation, along with Ndidi’s club Beşiktaş, issued condolence messages, describing the death as tragic and expressing support for the captain and his family during the difficult period.

For Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, the pain runs even deeper.

Speaking during an interview with ACLSports, the 29-year-old admitted that the losses nearly ended his football career.

Despite trying to appear strong, he revealed that the grief still weighs heavily on him. He said losing both parents so close together was one of the hardest experiences of his life, not just as a footballer but as a human being.

Nwabali disclosed that he told his Super Eagles captain he wanted to quit football altogether. It took the encouragement and intervention of teammates to help him continue playing.

These losses have exposed rare moments of vulnerability within the Super Eagles camp, reminding Nigerians that even elite athletes are not immune to personal tragedy.
